I have decided to start a collection of die-cast cars to match my car ownership history. I know not every car will be available in the colour and exact model I owned but I can repaint where necessary.
I have about 20 cars I would like to find and don’t mind taking my time to find them. I don’t want the highest quality models available as I want to keep the cost down to about £30 per car.
Any advice on what scale to go for? Is there a particular scale where I am more likely to find the models I need?

More choice 1/43, and they don't take up as much space.

I've got 1/43 of most of mine, and those that aren't exact are close.

There will always (probably) be a car you just can't find.

My SX4 didn't look much like this:

Or my Ranger like this:

And I couldn't find a Viva HC in 1/43 at all, so this was nearest

As you say though, if you are handy you can make mods.

Thanks for the tips. At 1:43 they shouldn’t cost too much either. I think I’ll start at the oldest and aim for one a month. That will keep me interested for a couple of years.

Excellent. As a matter of interest what will your first purchase be?

£30 should be enough for most 1/43 but some rarities can easily exceed that on popular auction site .

1/18 can go well over £100 for the rare stuff .

I've paid anything between £1 and well over £70 yes

I think the average for mine was probably £50, but quite a few aren't mainstream.

I went a bit mad at the end of February and bought over 20 Lamborghini 1/43s , from £5 to £40 for a Sesto Elemento .

Unfortunately I have hit my first hurdle trying to find my first car. A mk2 Fiesta (not an XR2). Cant find one in stock anywhere. My 2nd car a mk3 Capri should be easier.

I struggled with this too, although I was looking for an XR2. Bought mine from Spain in the end!

Actually, just looking again it's not an XR2, just a Mk2

Was it an XR2 you had? If I can find a diecast XR2 we could swap?

I was going to suggest the same. I had a quick look & all the XR2 are £80+!

Yip, so I see. If one does come up at a reasonable price I will keep you in mind.

If I did decide to buy an xr2, how much would you bid me for the Fiesta? It’s got no box.

Actually, I’m minded to buy an XR2 now. When it arrives I’ll stick the other on eBay and give you the heads up.
