I tried a stand mount magnifier, but found it tedious getting everything in the right place all the time. It was one like this:

I know you said you weren’t keen on head mounted (nor was I, or so I though) but bought this on a whim and have found it extremely useful. Only caveat is that it’s a little awkward if you wear spectacles. It does fit over a respirator if that’s a consideration.

can you explain how the head mount ones focus ....do you need to alter where you hold the item until it focuses or ?

Yes - pretty much. The different strength lenses give you options (I've pretty much stuck with the 1.5x lens) and as you say, just move the object as you need. The field of view is nice and big, but you can look over or under the lens to focus on things like instructions, or reaching for a tool etc.
I'm pretty short sighted, but I'm nearing the point where I need reading glasses (or as my optician keeps threatening, horrifyingly expensive bifocal contact lenses) and this magnifier has really helped with detail work. I went for the style 2 option in the amazon link, as it's the lightest.

I use the same head-mounted visor as the Amazon link above and it’s great, as I’m in complete denial about succumbing to glasses/lenses. Transformed all close-up and detail work for me.

Avoid the style 1 type - I have them & they are quite heavy & not very comfortable to wear, although I don't think they had the style 2 ones when I bought mine. They work well as magnifiers though.

I struggle with close up stuff and wear glasses so those in the link are no good to me. I used these at work and was so impressed, I bought a set for home use too.

There are plenty of chinese copies, but the optics on these are great

Multifocal contact lenses aren't horrifyingly expensive in my experience. Mine were less than twice the price of my single vision lenses.
