Why is it that (seemingly) RC in Germany seems to be much more popular than here in the UK?
I fly aircraft (gliders mostly) And the number of manufacturers and retailers in Germany that produce new models on a regular basis is large compared to most other countries including ours,
With gliding being popular in the east of Europe Especially in Czech,Ukraine & Russia.

Some of the German RC and modelling shows look fantastic compared to some of ours and (on you tube at least) are well attended by families etc....I went to a few here and the demographic is very different.

Does RC and modelling in general have an image problem In the u.k compared to our European counterparts?

And if so why? - can anyone enlighten me?

I think it is all down to image. Even when I was at school, being into RC and computers was uncool. Germany have that amazing Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, I don't think it would survive in the UK.

I think that's part of it certainly: Germany in particular seems to revere engineers & engineering in a way the UK tends to save for vacuous celebrities. Imagine saying you had earned a doctoral degree in engineering - here, blank stares, there, can expect to be addressed as Dr.-Ing... a bit bizarre when you consider our heritage.
