Hi there, looking for a bit of advice.

My 81yr old dad has a ‘00’ gauge railway layout in his loft which probably runs to about three loops of 50 foot each or so each with numerous amounts of rolling stock and Hornby locomotives.

He is having to move house due to I’ll health and wants to sell off the lot and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how best to do this. Is there a market for people coming in and buying a job lot or will he have to strip it down and sell piece by piece? (I would break it down myself but he lives 200 miles away unfortunately).

Any advice gratefully received.

A few options

Get onto a forum like rm web
https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/
You may find a local member willing to help.

Google the nearest model railway club and mail them, they may be able to help

Sell the lot to a dealer, they will want lists of what is there but are unlikely to want they layout, tracks and scenery, which may get damaged during removal, so you will need to dispose of those.

It may be worth checking on ebay what some of his locomotives are worth. If its hornby stuff from the 70s and 80s it's not worth much if its newer stuff that's running digital chips some locos could be worth £150 each, so not a trivial amount.

If he is still passionate about them you could maybe get a couple of display boxes for a couple of his favourite locos which he can have in new place.

Does he have a local model railway club? If so it'd be worth consulting them as they'll possibly have members who've experienced the scenario and can advise of the way forward.

I flogged a load of bits from my childhood recently by ebay. I found the best technique was to look at completed listings and then list them slightly under sales price as buy it now - depending on condition etc. May not be too practical for a chap in his 80s but maybe he could at least take some pics and ask you to list them etc?

Last time I read something like "Railway Modeller" magazine, I noticed various ads in the back of that for people that will buy layouts and collections.
