Just back from the Porsche Museum yesterday and I’ve decided I’d really like to get a 1:18 model of the 1970 #23 Porsche 917K Le Mans winner for my collection.

My two options from what I can find are CMR Models or Norev. I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to which would be better? I’ve had some good Norev models in the past, but never a CMR model.

I’ve got an Auto Art one:

It’s OK but pretty crude in terms of mechanical detail. I think Motor Sport are offering one signed:

https://www.motorsportmagazine.com/shop/model-cars...

If that’s the same as mine, in my opinion there’s no way it’s worth that. How much the signature is worth, I don’t know, but as a model I’d have thought about £50 tops would be about right.

Thanks! Think £299 is pushing it a bit. The Norev and CMR are £60 and to be honest for me I can deal with £60 quality. Was just wondering if £60 is better spent on Norev or CMR?

No idea, but I must admit from the images I've seen, despite massive price differences, they all look alike!

Have you got links to the different makes?

This is the CMR - https://ck-modelcars.de/en/cmr-1-18-porsche-917k-n...

Think it has slightly less detail than the AutoArt, doesn’t have the number illumination lights for example.

Here is the Norev - https://www.toms.nl/article/nor187586

Can’t really find a better picture of that one. Think it’s old stock.

Norev do make a 1/12 which looks alright. But I don’t usually collect 1/12 - https://www.norev.com/en/24-hours-of-le-mans/8741-...

Looking at those I'd say the Auto Art one that I've got is *possibly* a bit better. There's a second hand one on EBay at £48.20 all-in, Buy-it-Now. Which I'd say is about right for that standard of detail.

Could offer £40 and see what happens?

In the description box it says its a Boxter, but the listing description seems quite clear.

Also, if you put "Auto Art Porsche 917K 1970" into the search bar quite a few results seem to come up - massive variation in price.

That’s one is only a 1/43 scale. Thanks though but I’d like a 1/18. AutoArt 1/18 prices are a bit high I think. Will probably try the CMR

I think the main difference is that Norev is diecast and CMR is resin body.

Norev would be my choice

Ah i See, in all of my 60+ 1:18 I’ve not had a resin, all diecast. Might aim for the Norev in that case.

What would you suggest is the advantage of diecast over resin?

I am not a fan of resin, they tend to feel a little fragile

Norev may / will have opening parts and steerable wheels, CMR will be closed body and fixed steering.

Ahhh sorry, I think I initially put 1:18 into the search as well, and that one came up.

Just found on the Norev website that it looks like they are doing another run of the 1970 and 1971 917’s soon. I think I’ll hold out and get those!

£60 doesn't go very far on 1/18 Diecasts these days (check out diecastexchange forum and see all the people cooing over their £400 sealed resin BBRs...), but I've got a couple of CMRs (including one 917) and I reckon they are better than the Norevs I have, although neither are bad if you accept where the price point is these days.

I've got Exoto Group C cars I paid less than £100 for, but it was a while ago - Although not long ago for inflation to be the reason diecast collecting is so damned expensive these days...

Looking for a used AutoART, though, is worthwhile, sometimes a bargain crops up.

I’ve got the Autoart “McQueen” version, the thing that swung it for me was the gaping join in the sills the other options have where they’ve taken a short cut on the tail versions.
