Discussion
I’m doing the Ebbro McLaren Honda f1 early season and am a bit stuck on the paint job.
The top half is silver with metallic black on the bottom.
After the primer I was going to do the silver part without masking, on the presumption that the black when I do the masking for that is going to be sufficient to cover any overspray. Is this okay?
Also it hasn’t got any defining lines for the meeting of the colours on the contours towards the rear but it has a decal flash which goes between them. How do I mask it up? I thought of cutting the decal out then basically seeing where it lies on the car and pencilling a line and using that.
Another question...sorry...would the decal flash go on the black or the silver or straddle them?
The black should cover the silver no problem. Are you clear coating the silver before masking to protect it?
On my XJR9 I cut the decals out and made sure they straddled the demarcation:
However, it all depends on the decals being opaque. If they are a bit transparent, you'll see the high contrast demarcation line through them. You could try to use the edge of the decal as a masking template, but it'll be a big ask to get it perfect. I'd take a chance on them being opaque and hard mask the mid line. Can you see other builds online to see how they were done?

That’s exactly the answers I was looking for. Thanks for your help once again.
There’s a lovely build step by step on YouTube but unfortunately it’s a mid season car all in silver.
I could do that but it feels like taking the easy way out.
