I've just been reading up on backing metallic paints. I've got a Tamiya Sand Viper on the way and fancy doing it in a dark metallic red. Have seen forum posts in other places that suggest doing metallic red backed by silver backed by black. Or variations like metallic red, just backed by gunmetal.

Can someone clarify exactly how to do this? Do you do the full 3 layers of the m'red, then 3 of silver, then 3 of black? Or one layer of each? Two of each?

I usually just back with silver if I want a bright colour or black if I want it darker. I’ve never backed with multiple colours.

How many layers do you do of your main colour, and how many of your backing?

If you are painting from the inside, you just back them to stop light leaking through. It really doesnt make much difference.
