I've never before been interested in these, mainly considering 1:1 scale helmets to look much better. The problem being 1:1 scale helmets either seem to be thousands of pounds of cheap chinese things knocked up in some sweatshop.

With Bell releasing Hamilton's rather fetching 2020 pre-season design (I'm desperately trying not to type out Lewis Hamilton's Purple Bell Helmet) and a 20% offer code I decided to order.

It's yet to arrive but I'm looking forward to getting it but really, I have no idea about them. Is the common thing to order genuine ones from the official lines? Do people order any manufacturers?

As with most memorabilia I try not to buy any knock off stuff from eBay but not knowing much about these at all I thought I'd ask in this forum for some advice.

Any collectors out there?

Not much love for these on the forum? A bit of bored time during lockdown and some discount codes mean a few I’ve ordered have started to come through. 1st to arrive is Max’s special from spa last year.

I can see the attraction from a design point of view. I don't know though... models of helmets. It's not far removed from 'models of hats' which is similar to 'models of shoes'. wink

hehe that’s quite a funny way of looking at it ! For the avoidance of doubt however I wouldn’t wear a 1:1 scale replica of a driver’s helmet even if I could afford them!

The closest I’ve come to this is a (I think) 1/8 replica of Gilles’ final design, I just don’t have the space for 1/2.

Are they produced by the original manufacturer (Bell Schroth etc)? What’s the inside like? I’m a sufficient Max fan I could see myself getting in to these. If I had the space ... smile

Yes, as far as I'm aware as they all come boxed with their manufacturers name on them-certainly Bell's are sold on Bell's main website so I think they're all genuine.

The above MV33 one is stunning in real life, the metallic orange paint really pops. My idea is I'm going to build a cloakroom toilet off our hall and I'm going to put all my car stuff in there-photos of trackways, F1 stuff etc and I'll build a false wall above the bog and it's going to have a built in display cabinet, full of F1 helmets.

Obviously this will be immensely naff but it's in the bog so I think I can get away with it!

It can become an expensive hobby. I was only going to buy the Lewis 2020 shakedown helmet - I currently have six with a couple more due over the next few days.

Best place to buy is via some of the Facebook pages. There are dedicated pages who solely buy, sell & give advise on the 1/2 helmets & there are a couple of traders who sell the new releases, the special releases & will offer guidance when needed.

There are also many lids for sale on fleabay. Most are legit & the sellers are regular sellers who rarely, if ever, rip anyone off.

Just do your homework, be careful & enjoy the hobby.

And be careful when buying lids with signatures. Best place to buy these is via the traders who usually get the lids signed in one go, provide proof of signature & who will give piece if mind to those who are wary.

One final point - the 1/1 scale market is full of sharks & scumbags so unless you are extremely clued up avoid this like the plague.
