PLEASE look at the first line before answering, it will save your time and mine

sorry to be brutal but to have people suggest Corvette and Tirpitz model whilst trying to be helpful are not , so can i start again

Look at the first line

Really getting the urge to do a model ( static to start but with the possibility of going RC later) of HMS Dido

Dad was on her during the Arctic runs ( have just sent off for his medal)

Given up waiting for a 1/350 Trumpeter!! and 1/700 is just tooooo small

There seem to be two suppliers Fleetscale at 1/128 and Deansmarine at 1/96

Costwise not much it in, and although Deans are bloody enormous 5ft+ OA they seem to have a better fittings kit with a a lot more smaller bits ready moulded to put on

The only question i have is what would be the best material to make the superstructure out of

I am looking at 0.05mm brass drawn on Autocad so it is cut axccurately and will be of tab and slot construction

My lad is thinking of getting a laser cutting machine, so if wood is the preferred medium what thickness and what type is recommended
So if any big ship builder are out there ....

Any tips, suggestions etc welcome

Thanks

The Corvette thread I linked to was 1:72, ie around the scale range you're looking at.

You said you were thinking of using brass, and asked for tips and suggestions. The thread contains an extensive account of how everything from small fittings to decks, and superstructure sections were fabricated from brass.

I don't see how it's not relevant to what you were asking?

There are loads of books and forums specifically dedicated to building ships. This Book by the master builder Norman Ough shows what's possible:

and while it's by no means a step-by-step guide, it contains extracts of his build articles:

and contains images of his hand drawn plans for HMS Dido (which he built as a model):

That’s ok. Have a look on amazon for the Norman Ough book - other ‘Similar items’ will come up on model ship building; some you can ‘look inside’ for a selection of pages, and Customer reviews are often useful to see what you’re in for.
