Evening chaps, some advice please. I’m really looking forward to building my Tamiya buggy champ but more so the oily bits rather than the painty bits. Are there people who you can commission to do this for you and roughly at what sort of cost? Thanks in advance, cheers

Edited to add, its really nice detailing and patina on the driver that I want to achieve along with a single colour on the body.

Join and send a message to TurnipJF on https://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/index.php?/profil... as I know he sometimes does jobs for other tamiyaclub members. I believe he enjoys doing it so doesn’t charge (I don’t know the ins and outs but check with him)

Thanks for the reply and advice. Think I would want to pay someone for their expertise/ time/ materials.

Just out of interest, does anybody on here do it?

I know the professional sprayers that do buggy shell s for racers etc aren’t cheap I believe cost is between 40-60 pounds. But not sure if they would do brush painting for drivers etc. That’s more of a modellers thing. I got some advice off tamiyabase a long time ago when I was doing one.

Some reading for you!

I’d paint the driver figure for you, as long as you don’t want anything too fancy.

Isnt that shell just one colour sprayed from the inside and then stickers on the outside.
There really isnt any skill needed for that, I wouldnt waste your money getting the shell sprayed by someone.

Most are like that but It’s a more traditional opaque shell rather than polycarbonate. The driver is also exposed and has a good level of detail for an RC car.

I could paint the bodyshell for you if you really don’t want to do it, if you send the paint can as well. Not sure from the above if you only mean the driver.

Actually, Mr. Jackal is right about the body shell. Unlike the original Rough Rider, for the re-release (marketed as the Buggy Champ so as not to be confused with a dildo) Tamiya chose not to pay the licence fees to use the original sponsor’s logos. Instead, the generic, similar-looking logos are printed onto a full-field white background sticker. You spray the shell in the colour of your choice, apply the (three, I think) large stickers, which give the effect of a two-tone body, and then lacquer over (if you so wish). It’s an absolute cinch.

Unless........ you’re determined to build the car that you were never allowed as a child, but have the income that you’d never dreamed of as said sprog. Then you can trawl eBay for a whole host of upgrade parts. And then spend a small fortune for an original, unused sticker set (the modern reproduction sheets of the original stickers are really poor and fuzzy!). Then you WILL have to mask up and spray both body colours, before carefully cutting each and every sticker from the sheet, painstakingly applying them and then lacquering over them.

And then you’ll feel compelled to put the finished buggy on a shelf in your study, because you daren’t actually get it muddy......

^^ thanks all for the advice and the offers. Checking the pack, you are correct the 2 tone is a sticker so i am going to have a go at the body, although thank you for the very kind offer from coolhands above.

Rob has very kindly offered to complete the driver figure which i think will make a massive difference to the overall look of the buggy.

Just about to start the main build which i am very excited about. A rough rider (buggy champ), could only dream of one of these when i was a lad...

It will definitely be used, its main duty will be chasing my lad's Tamiya neo fighter around our local park, bit of mud will be fine but i am going to take good care of it!

To be fair you would pay that for materials.

Seems like a good deal.

That’s for the Tamtech version. It’s less than half the size of the full-size Rough Rider.

Not according to the Q&A on their website.

That clearly states it's for the 1/10th scale Buggy Champ.

Very good. Did you wash the face with brown and then paint with tan after? To give him a craggy look
