Mamod TE1A Steam Traction Engine
Discussion
I won a local auction for an old Tamiya Wild WIlly and as part of the lot I also got a Mamod TE1A steam Traction Engine. They aren't really my thing so I'm probably going to chuck on ebay but quite fancy getting it running first. It looks in decent condition but has sat a while, so would it be as simple as following a YouTube guide to get it running or is it the type of thing that needs an export eye over it? Specifically would it need oiling first and with it being pressurised if there are any safety concerns.
Any advice appreciated, cheers.

The boilers run at a low pressure, 10 psi-ish and the relief valve blows at 15 psi-ish, low for a steam engine.
You could pressure test it by rigging up something with a bike pump, cold water and a pressure gauge and see if it’s all OK.
The boiler volume isn't large enough for it to legally register on safety concerns. And also in conjunction with the boiler pressure, it doesn’t register either.
Have a good nosy round the soldered joints for cracks etc.. Give it an oil and then fill up the burner with meths and stick it at the bottom of the garden. If it goes bang, at least you will be some distance away from it…..
They fetch good money…. http://www.mikes-steam-engines.co.uk/for_sale.htm

Great advice thanks. I think mine might be a newer model as has a water gauge on the back and the tray looks newer. From what I've read looks like it uses tablets rather than meths.
No probs on the pics, here you go. It's an early swb one just really mucky. Looking forward to getting it all cleaned up.

that wild willy is probably worth good money. i sold mine with a fair bit of body damage, grill winch and front bumper. It raised over 100 pounds on eBay a few years ago.
That could a restoration and shelf queen, are not many in that good nick around any more. If you used it they flip and roll over very easily

Thanks I'll check out their website. I need a hub cap to hold the front wheel on and few fuel tablets and will see if fires up.
Wild Willy has cleaned up well, still need to sort the electrics though. It looks complete apart from its missing the lower front brace pipe and the receiver power pack has snapped as the AA batteries had all popped due to age..
