Was in a small town in upstate New York and happened upon a model shop. In amongst the new whizzy drones and r/c stuff, there was a shelf of dusty model kits:

Ended up buying this for $9.95 which would have been a lot cheaper pre Brexit sterling plunge.

Box faded, held together by an elastic band, bits inside rattling around, instructions yellowed, and it has one of those clear plastic stands that models in my youth had.

So will give it a go.

Question:

How do these colours.....:

......translate to modern Tamiya ones?

I bought that when it first came out, for 3/- (15p!!)

HP 42 and Jetstream in original boxes are pretty rare - the Jetstream colour scheme was based on a USAF order that never materialised IIRC.

Was just thinking the same thing. That One-Eleven was on my wanted list for years.

They’re not exactly cheap though, have you looked at some of the prices? You can get some of the old UK boxed kits cheaper at model shows.

I must admit to not looking at the prices. I'd be awful at a model show. As a (young)teenager I'd buy a kit every weekend, and a pile at airshows. But only build at a rate of about one a fortnight. Even now I've a stash building inexorably, and I've not finished a kit in about 35 years, or more. paperbag

Looks a bit like some of my stash. I bought that Beaufighter when I was about ten. I had just read Bob Braham's autobiography so was infatuated with all things Beaufighterish.

My kit would have been in this boxing -

I think it was the first model I ever attempted to paint. It's of its time so don't expect accuracy.

Wash, dry and most superfluous bits of plastic cut off. The good news is it all the bits seem to be there. The bad news is that there is no cockpit detail at all - just a bench for the pilot to perch on. And the canopy fit is terrible.

I’ve still got a very frosted canopy and torpedo half in the spares box. Mine was a dogfight double with a ‘109. I guess the canopy disaster was the reason it never got finished. I’ve got the Hasegawa version in the stash.

I am trying to fabricate a cockpit out of bits of cardboard... wish me luck.

I’ve printed out instrument panels from photographs before now. They looked ok through a canopy.

You could do the same for cockpit sides and seat belts I guess.

Hmmm this model making lark is giving me OCD. Can’t be doing with defects like that.

Very bad wing fit, needs a lot of whittling with a sharp blade to get the edges to line up.

Tamiya grey primer.
