No not a Geordie tank but a Meng Toon Tank.
Cheap cool tanks great for practicing weathering on.
This is a KV-2 and weathered with AK filter, washes, streaking grime and Russian earth pigments.
This is my first time attempting any of this kind of weathering or chipping and quite pleased how it turned out.

On a kit like this though you don't need to worry. It was only 12 quid, doesn't matter if it doesn't please the rivet counters and at worst you just spray it all one colour again and start over.
I learnt a lot in technique for next time.
Hopefully then when I do a "real" tank I'll have to worry more about where I put the chips rather than how.
Hairspray technique next, so a different style of chipping.

I’ve got a robot I’m half way through building. I did some test pieces to try paint chipping, but it just ended up looking like a well used kids toy. I think the ‘chips’ should maybe have been smaller. On a kit like this though you don't need to worry. I built 4 of these Toon Tanks last year, none came out looking as good as yours! I tried salt chipping and sand chipping, both worked OK but I think you've got a better look there than I managed.
How did you get the effect of the lighter paint around the chip edges? Is it as simple as painting light chips on first and then adding the dark chip over them later or is it something more complicated? The effect really suits the Toon style.

It's exactly that.
I used the AK Russian colours set. 4BO as a base, Highlights for the lighter chips and then 6k brown in the centres.
Just use a fine brush with a light touch. I was a bit heavy with the lighter chips but by the end I was a lot more accurate with the brown. I tried using sponge at first but never got on with it.
It also helps once the paint has thickened a bit as the session goes on, don't thin the paint.
Start with very small chips. As you get more confident you realise some larger chips actually work. Remember though to sit back and look at the effect every now and then though as you can get too focussed on individual chips that don't matter.

I really enjoyed building those Toon Tanks as it was a bit different to the real-world tanks and planes I'd been making before. I did some of the Bandai Star Wars models also - Boba Fett, Stormtrooper, AT-AT etc... which were fun.
The problem now is that I can't find anything else that's a bit different to grab my interest. I wanted an ED-209 but all I can find are some old and expensive vinyl kits that look fairly bad. Not really into jets so the egg planes didn't appeal too much, I prefer WW1 aircraft.
Anyone got any ideas of more obscure kits with interesting subjects?

Revell did some crazy stuff, including these:Anyone got any ideas of more obscure kits with interesting subjects?
Which I guess are either amazing, or crap, depending on your point of view. They also did a Spitfire and Messerschmitt in the same range, and a load of vehicles.
