I’ve been looking for a 1:18 scale model of my current car, a V8 Vantage, and would quite like it in a close colour, it would appear this is a none starter.
I can find a V12 in nearly the right colour, and plenty of V8’s in random colours nothing like mine, a dark red metallic.
So it got me thinking, how hard is it to respray one? What kit am I going to need? Does anyone offer this as a service? How bad can it go? paperbag

Doing it well isn't difficult, but would need a reasonable amount of kit (airbrush and compressor plus ancillaries).

Ultimately, it's "just" a case of masking it all off, getting the right colour mixed, then a couple of thin coats and some varnish.

Got a link to the model you're thinking of? If I'm confident of doing it, I'd gladly do it for you gratis. Out of the country for the next few weeks though - but am off work all Easter...

Worth checking out the 'Custom Model Resources' section of this forum: https://www.diecastxchange.com/forum1/forum/29-dx-...

Wealth of knowledge and some stunning work in the showcase area.

Looks pretty straightforward. Mix of tamiya masking tape and liquid mask - then only challenge is getting a close enough colour.

If you're happy to wait until Easter, drop me a PM and I'll give you my address.

As it's a current model of a car (all be it a rather rare and expensive one) is it possible to get that colour in a rattle can from somewhere? Might save who ever does it some time or make it more do-able for the owner....

Or are colours for models different somehow (finer metallic flakes?).

Finer flakes, but also it's very difficult to get a nice thin coating with a rattle can - which spoils the effect somewhat when the scaled up paint would be 10mm thick!

Tamiya do a rattle can more or less exactly that colour. I can’t remember what the colour is, but they have scale metal flake.

I used it on a NSX I built.

Just had a look. The colour is TS-95; pure metallic red.

Hope this helps.

Some hate them, some love them. I've never had an issue over far too many to mention repaints and builds.
