Following on from the discussion that's appeared in the lego thread I've started this to discuss the ugears models.

I'd never heard of them before but I'm looking forward to getting building. I think there may be a few on the horizon

A few more pics of my U9 Grand Prix Car smile

The rubber band 'chain drive' is just for show - the wheels are gear driven (Forward, neutral and reverse gear)

'Starting handle' to wind up the rubber band drive!

I'll admit I didn't really read much about these before clicking the buy button, are these glued together?

Nah, they all slot together and have little clips and pins to hold in place. Proper smart design, clever bunch of people.

They come with a bag of cocktail sticks which you cut to various lengths using a guide jig. You will inevitably end up jamming one of these down your thumb nail at some point wink
Make sure you have a nice sharp craft knife and some sand paper to clean up the edges of the laser cut parts. Moving parts will require lubricating by rubbing with candle wax during assembly.
Ideal little project for that week between Christmas and New Year smile

I have the same car I made last christmas. It’s nice except I had a few issues with one piece that snapped, the crank that holds the pistons.

Ugears sent a replacement which the postman bent and snapped, they replaced again but sent it properly protected and then it was ok.

I found it fiddly to build I have to say and don’t know if I’d buy another large model.

I bought the tram and tramway for my dad which he built and loved doing it.

I also bought these recently, there limited apparently, and a very quick build - 20mins all in...

Just a heads up, that despite the eBay 15% Blanket promo ending last night. We have a 15% off all UGEARS Promo on eBay for the next 7days. It officially starts (with all the banners etc at 8am), but the prices are live now.

My kit arrived today, I've had a quick look at the instructions and I'm really impressed. Looking forward to my Christmas break when I can get stuck into the build.

They are all good, depends on his interests. There are cars, trucks, trains, trams, a boat to name the vehicles then timers, locks, boxes. Spend 2mins and have a flick through - something for everybody.

Best Seller is the 70044 Car which is out of stock for a couple weeks, or the new 70058 Express Train. Non vehicle - https://www.jadlamracingmodels.com/ugears-chronogr...

Hi Russ

I tried to buy the Grand Prix car yesterday, but you are out of stock. Will you be getting more before Christmas?

Thanks

Yes, it’s a right pain. I literally sold all the UK stock in the last couple weeks with some promo activity on my site and Ebay.

We have a large delivery coming in just before Christmas. But being a container it’s hit or miss on exactly when it will be available for shipping.

If you defo want that model I’d look for another retailer who actually has it in stock.

I started a build thread on here a couple of years ago for my locomotive but no-one seemed interested so I stopped updating it. That's long since been completed and sits in my computer room - unfortuantely doesn't move under it's own elastic power as I don't think I was thorough enough with burrs. I completed the 20 minute timer (which does work) as a Christmas gift last year, and this year I hope to get another - perhaps the other loco, the truck or the car in the OP!

UGears are fantastic, although you do have to be careful as some of the bits are mighty fragile. Glad to see they are finally getting some love.

Started the gp car this evening. It was going well until one of the bits that the elastic bands are connected to under the engine gave way.

I'll carry on with the build but it's a bit annoying as even if I get a replacement part it's going to be a right ball ache to install.

I tried gluing the bit that holds the bands together but there's too much tension and it just gave way even with a cable tie to give it support.

I decided the best course of action was to remove one band and cable tie the remaining one on. Whether its a success or not remains to be seen but it'll be a mostly static model so not to worry.

I'm really impressed with the engineering that's gone into this.

I can't recall if there was a spare included for that part as I guess it's under a fair bit of load when cranked up. I know it's a pain, but if there's a spare would probably be worth dismantling to replace it now rather than when complete. It is worth it to be able to run the engine properly smile

I didn't realise there were spares! Having checked the rest of the kit there are indeed 3 spares for this bit. I've stripped it and rebuilt so it's up to full 4 band power now. Cheers mate
