I was tidying up and came across my fathers old train set.

I wondered if anyone knew anything about it?

Based on father being born in the 1930's I assume this is no later than mid 1940's (pure speculation)?

I last ran it in the 1980's.

It has a water tank that is heated by wicks fed by a metholated spirit tank.

2 forward gears and 1 reverse.

There is about 30 feet of metal and wood track and a metal destination time board (not digital smile )

I can't see a brand name on it and recall Mamod models from my own childhood.

I would be grateful if anyone knows anything about it, specifically year of manufacture.

I am not looking to sell, as it has sentimental value.

Thanks.

Possibly Bing (German) or Bassett Lowke? I think Basset Lowke used to import Bing trains from Germany and re paint them in British colour schemes. Lovely thing though!

Thanks for your reply.

I will have another look tomorrow to see if I can see any Bing or Basset Lowke identifying marks.

One thing that surprises me, would Germany have been putting resources of metal into toys during and not long after WW2?

Thanks for the lead.

That's lovely, but can you imagine that being on sale now with that flame. H & S would be having conniptions.

ciege, thank you so much for your reply and the information.

From the website link you provided, the train would appear to be the Bing guage1 1902 Live steam Loco and tender.

I thought I had a rough idea of it's age based on my fathers date of birth, it would appear to have been manufactured much earlier than I expected.

I looked over the Loco this morning for any branding, the only markings I could find was the emblem on the front of the boiler.

It does seem to tie in with the GBN Bavaria logo on the website link you posted, with no mention of Bassett-Lowke anywhere.

The video is great, the flames up the side account for the burnt paint you see on the model!

I notice the engine was run indoors, I can only assume from experience that the owner waited until their Mum was out of the house! smile

Thanks again.
