There seems to be a few items on the bay of E but no clues as to how good.
You can even get 00 scale roundabouts and other fair ground items.
i'm just starting to muck about with my sons old Thomas Tank set, adding track, scenery and trains. Can I hijack and ask people Hornby v Lima v Bachmann

What you're really asking for is 1/76 scale figures – "OO gauge" refers to the track. Depending on your definition of cheap they're easy to get from any model shop on or offline.

Ref the second "hi-jack" question, you're comparing apples with apples. I'm not sure there is any qualitative difference nowadays (although that said I'm not sure Lima are still 'a thing', at least as far as British outline model railways go.)

Ah OK will look for those! As all I want to do is photograph them then I don't really want to be paying 2.50each as I'd want a bunch really to mess around with

If your willing to paint them yourself then unpainted bulk packs are a bargain,
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Preiser-16326-Unpainted-T...
£25 for 120 - I know they are technically HO (1:87) not OO, but in reality there isnt much difference, a 6 foot HO figure will be 5ft 3 in in OO, so not exactly a dwarf smile

Going up in size, most military figures are 1:72, again cheapest unpainted. https://www.jadlamracingmodels.com/models/figures?...

As far as I'm aware, the fit and finish of the Bachmann Locos is just a bit nicer than Hornby, plus I'm fairly sure the Hornby locos have the actual drive motor in the tender, not the engine itself, whereas the Bachmann ones are the other way around. That may or may not bother you but some OO fans prefer the engine to do the 'pulling' for accuracy.

By far the biggest range is from Germany by Preiser , dozens of UK suppliers on Ebay . They really have a figure or pack for almost everything and cover some historical eras as well . Yes there HO so slightly smaller at 1.87 scale, but I've used them for train crew and seated passengers on my OO layout. Plenty of non rail so I'd be surprised if you can't find something suitable.

I did a magazine cover using OO figures a while back - 1:76 has the advantage that other scenic items are easily available too.

I discovered these during a visit to Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg:

They're certainly 'cheap'.
