I thought I’d stick with aircraft as I’d really enjoyed the last couple of builds. (I have a stack of cars to build)

Anyhoo here’s the box art

And some really nice decals

Some quite frankly terrifying stencils

Very nice PE parts. Should make the cockpit look great.

Clear parts remain in the bag for now.

And finally the five sprues that make up the plastic parts.

The kit also includes some pre-cut masks, but I thought I’d spare you a picture of a yellow square.

I really like these profipack kits though. This one cost £15. If I were to buy A.N. other spitfire kit, I’d spend that on the PE and masks. Essentially you get the kit for free. Well sort of. They’re also really nice kits too.

I will make a start on this tonight.

They really do seem to be the "go-to" Spitfires in 1/72 these days.

I built the original Airfix Mk1 Spitfire (very badly) as a youngster back in the day; you wouldn't believe how few parts there were!

I couldn’t resist putting the instrument panel together this morning. I’m not sure why, but it always motivates me for the build.
Thanks to dr_gn for the loan of the novelty oversized one pound coin.

This is made of three pieces of PE. I use canopy glue as it also adds the glass on the instruments.

It’s not quite as bad as it looks. Most of the parts are for options not even in this kit. The early canopies and so on.

I like the Airfix one. It took me a couple of hours to build. This is going to take a week for the stencils.

Another good choice of kit. You can't do much better than Eduard Profipacks for content and quality.

BTW, not sure if you know, but if you wanted to use up your spare decal options, Eduard do "overtrees", which are just the bare bones of the kit (no decals or instructions etc.), sold at a reduced price:

I think they're only available for a limited time after the initial model release.

One of my favourite kits of all times is the old 1975 Airfix Spitfire Vb. I've built it a number of times over the years. By modern standards its very basic but the overall shape is quite good.

My least favourite 1/72 Spitfire that I've built so far is the Academy XIV. It's a nice build but looks wrong.

Ooh, interesting, I've got the profipack mk 9 on the go (been on the go for ages, time/motivation probs)
I also got the resin engine, brass gear legs, resin wheels/tyres, PE flaps.

Looking forward to your build.

This is a purely out of the box build. Although the box has quite a lot in it.

I assembled the cockpit tonight.

Some of the PE is tiny. I’m finding it a bit challenging.

That is amazing detail for a 1/72 kit. The original Airfix Spitfire could be built with only NINE parts IIRC; cockpit detail was non-existant - the pilots head and shoulders were moulded into the fuselage sides rather like a Scalextric F1 car of the time! The wings were moulded with the u/c in the up position; you could stick wheels on to display it on the ground but the others would still be showing if you looked underneath!
Ah, Tempus fugit.

That was 60 plus years ago.

This is the original 1955 product -

Airfix replaced their original Spitfire with their MkIX in 1959. It still wasn't great but the 1960s box art by Roy Cross was lovely -

In 1975 they produced the still rather nice but basic MkV -

Finally, they also did a nice (for the time) MKI in 1979 -

Since the Airfix "revival" in 2006 they have produced a modern replacement MkIX, a new MkI, a PRXIX and a Mk21.

How come there are different shades of cockpit green there (first image) - is it the result of a wash?

My earliest Spitfire build was this one from Frog -

I would have built it around 1968/69.

If you are taking about the area behind the seat. The instructions state it should be aluminium.
If you are talking about anything else. It’s a mixture of poor eyesight and modelling skills I’m afraid.

No just the green bits - it looks like the effect you get with a wash applied to unsealed matt paint.
