I've got a sudden irrational desire to have a radio controlled boat but don't know what to buy. Suggestions welcome.

Don't want anything that's horrendously expensive, but also not something plastic that will break and I can't get parts for. Would rather but second hand, but only if that's sensible.

As a child I had RC cars, various hobby spec 10th scale electric buggys I used to race at the local club, and then later while at Uni an 8th scale nitro Hyper 7.

Got on to the NiMH game, but missed brushless/LiPo and stuck with 27mhz. Still got everything.

The pro boat range will have something that would suit, depending on what size you want to go for.

I have the Blackjack 29 inch catamaran, it’s plenty fast enough even on big lakes.

They are over £300 now though, but I got it for half of that when on offer.

Be prepared to spend big bucks on Lipos though, mine runs 4s packs back to back, it as you k ow you end up spending more on batteries than what it’s powering in the long run!

Have fun!

I had a Traxxas spartan that came a cropper against a goose so rather waste more money, I found a little NQD RC jet boat when i was in florida for under $50 and its hilarious fun, even better with the brushless conversion kit.

Search on youtube for NQD Jet boats to see them used in anger.

Fair, thanks both. Seems to be a lot less second hand than I expected.

I'd say £150 it probably getting towards the max I could spend on an impulse purchase, but it also depends if I could get that back if I resold it.

This is local to me; not sure on your thoughts. Don't know if nitro is better or worse the battery for occasional use, fuel has a shortish shelf life, but batteries don't last forever and need charging.

Looks fun, and my work involves designing jet boats, but also stupid money.
