I've been trying to remember the kits Airfix did in 1/24th scale. I appreciate they still do some.

Spitfire
Hurricane
BF109
Stuka
Harrier
Mosquito
Typhoon

Also was there a P51? I seem to remember at least one more, maybe P47 or FW190.

There was/is both a P-51 and an Fw190 -

It's still in production -

The Fw190

It's also been available in the modern "red box" era.

The only one you’ll get your hands on New from retailers is the A25001a Mosquito... drop me a message if you want.

All the others are getting pretty expensive now...

I've always liked those 1/24th kits, I had the Spitfire, Hurricane and Me 109 as lad. I wonder if the original tooling has suffered in the same way that some modellers have suggested the large scale Bentley Blower kit has, I've read that it doesn't go together so well now (I've been tempted to buy it recently).

Always fancied a 1/24 Boulton Paul Defiant for some reason. Don't suppose there was ever much chance of them doing one.

I'd like a Stuka, but the examples I've seen on fLeabay seem to go for silly money :-(

Lots on Ebay 'sold' listings for about £70 - £80 as far as I can see. Some less than that.

I wouldn't class that as silly money for a model of that size.

I think it's silly compared to the majority of the other 1/24 WW2 planes (not as good I know)
that can be got for about £30, and silly compared to the 1/24 Typhoon that can be got for about £70.

Depends how you look at it I suppose. Compared with the time and materials you'd be investing in building it, the price discrepancy wouldn't concern me in the slightest if it's a subject I particularly wanted, and it was better quality than the others.

Then again I often used to pay several times the kit price for aftermarket parts, so the base kit cost became insignificant.

The newer kits, the tiffie & the mossie are mighty fine but the old 1/24 stuff like the Mk1a spit, the Fw, the HUrricane etc are a pile of crap & need a mass of work to get them up to scratch. I had the spit a couple of years ago & it was utter bonk to work with out of the box. That said, they are still easily available in a lot of model shops. My local one has the Fw, the spit (inc the Vb version) & the mustang. Old tooling new boxes so beware.

The Ju87 Stuka is still pretty good. Mouldings still nice and crisp.

As a kid I had the Spitfire and the Mustang.

I think my parents binned all my old models and a huge selection of 1:32 Airfix soldiers (pretty sure I had 90% of everything they did - Some friends and I used to wargame with them into our teens - Military Modelling Annual one year published rules for 1:32 Wargames - Always fun and not as serious as most!).

Pretty sure they wouldn't be worth much made up, but amazing the prices people will pay for models now!

It was one of the later ones to be released and never sold as many due to being more expensive than the others, so the moulds haven't worn as badly as the other 1/24th kits.

I haven't seen one of those in many a year. My dad & I made one about 40 odd years ago. Cracking kit but not surprised it didn't sell as much as the allied stuff so good to know its still good. Iirc the engine was very well detailed. I'd definitely get one if i saw one on offer.

It was re-released about 3-4 years ago in a new red box with new decal schemes, although its not in the current catalogue.

The only one I built was the Harrier GR1, back when it was called the plain old 'Harrier'.

I'd wanted to build a big scale kit, but couldn't really afford them, nor did I really have the space to display one.

Then one day my dad came home with a box containing a partially (badly) built 1/24 Airfix Harrier. One of his mates had bought one for his son, who'd duly cracked on with it despite never having built a model kit before, made an absolute abortion of it, and chucked it to one side.

After cleaning it up and putting right some of the errors from the original owner, I finished it in the RAF markings and by some minor miracle all of the parts were either on the build or in the box, and all were salvageable. I was never the greatest scale modeler in the world, but I was very proud of my rescue attempt on that one.

I wish I still had it, but almost all of my plastic kits were damaged one way or another after I left home and joined the army. I had three younger brothers, and they played with the finished kits like they were Corgi toys, my mother bashed up another load boxing them up to 'keep safe', and dust and damp took it's toll on what was left.
