This was started last year on holiday as a "quickie". It only took me 18 months to finally finish it smile

The kit is actually of the Apache ground attack version so I had to modify it slightly to bring it closer to the recce version used by the RAF. I've always liked the early Mustangs and felt they were unfairly maligned.

That looks fantastic. Is it the italeri kit? I’ve got this one to build after the academy P51B. I’m going for the USAAF version with the 20mm cannons👍

Eric. I was wondering how you do your camouflage? It seems to be just right in terms of definition without too hard edge. I’d be interested to learn your technique.

Nice work Eric and great to see an early P51 also.

Rolled into thin "worms" which are laid out on the surface of the model to delineate the pattern and then filled in with masking tape.

1/72 is too small to achieve the required thin overspray you see on real aircarft - unless you are a bit of an airbrush god.

Not my model but it does illustrate the technique -

Is that the right picture? It looks like Tamiya flexible tape.

I think you are right.

Here's a better picture. Once the Blue Tack is laid down, the appropriate areas can be filled in with Tamiya tape or equivalent. Copydex or Humbrol Maskol can also be used as a in filler as they dry to a rubbery consistency which peels away when dry.

I guess you need to have a uniform thickness of “worm” for it to work. Will give it a go on my Eduard tempest when I get around to building it.

It's quite fun rolling out the "worms" or "sausages" - like being 5 years old again.
