Looking for an adhesive/filler
Discussion
I'm halfway through a woodturning project, and stuck. The piece of wood has a massive crack in it, and if I continue with hollowing out the middle in to a vase, it will fly apart:
I have some clear polyester resin, but it's very runny and hard to use. Is there a clear - or possibly black - adhesive filler that I can force into the cracks to hold it all together? It need to stick well and not shrink. Thanks!

Not sure about specific products, one two idea (I have done similar but not the same) is to make a damn out of tape and blutac and pour in the runny resin into the space. Once hardened you can then turn off the excess.
Other option would be to see if you can die some car filler to an interesting colour and use that. Powdered die should work if you can get any?

How about something like Milliput? https://www.milliput.com/ it's available in black. It comes in two tubes you mix the two parts in equal portions with your fingers and then press into the crack.
I've seen other turners on youtube use it for projects so it should be alright to turn it and sand it after it's set.

Does it have adhesive properties? This thing will be basically two halves when I turn the middle out...!
Well if you mean the Milliput then their website says:Why Milliput?
The Most Versatile Material Available. It is:
Self hardening
Non shrinking
Tough and durable
Sets underwater
Electrically insulating
Water, heat and chemical resistant
Highly adhesive to most materials
Moulds like putty - sets like rock
So that would be a yes. It's just a thick epoxy resin so in effect should work as well as a thick araldite. Also works in the Marine environment which you are also interested in I believe?
Not a waste of time at all. There are many examples of resin filled turned bowls and similar items. If well stuck together then it should be fine.
Perhaps what is more of an important point is how dry the timber is? If it is wet then further drying, distortion and splitting may occur which may cause further splitting. If it is already dry (circa 10% moisture content) then that shouldn’t be a problem.
Concrete dye as mentioned in the other thread? anything powdered should work in theory to dye resin or filler.

I suspect you really know (like the rest of us) that it's a waste of time to even try - just use a new piece of wood!
Well if it was a lump of pine, yes, but that piece is unique, and lovely, and I've spent a lot of time getting this far would lke to save it if possible. If my plan - black Milliput seems like the best answer - doesn't work then at least I tried Thanks 951TSE for the idea!Gassing Station | Scale Models | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
