R/C off the shelf?
Discussion
I've been playing with quadcopters for a while, but decided to try out RC trucks a month ago as flying these days is getting too much of a hassle with idiots flying too close to airports... Anyway, bought a JLB Racing CHEETAH 1/10 scale from banggood.com and for the money it's pretty close to indestructible and a whole lot of fun to bash about in the local park. Hard to think of a better bang for buck RC car

Boy is starting to hanker for an R/C.
He'd rather buy one built he can then tinker with upgrading.
I'd rather he started with a Tamiya but that's a no soon....
who do you suggest we research and avoid?

Personally I do not understand the love of the Tamiya products. They are by and large rubbish in terms of performance and use very out dated electronics.
Ok, the building can be fun of them. But the end product is poor.
Check out Traxxas and Losi. Both offer RTR kits and are well designed.
If you want more budget focus, check out Hobbyking. Loads of great RTR or kits for low money.
Some of the cheaper offerings aren't always great though, so understanding what you are buying is generally a good bet.
And importantly use.
Touring cars and the like look cool. But you'll be massively restricted where you can use them, i.e. smooth flat tarmac.
Buggies and trucks are much more versatile.
If you think they'll want to go race them, then you'll need something eligible and arguably competitive.
Also think safety. LiPo batteries are great, but require respect to charge and use and can be as volatile as petrol.
NiCd is way old, just walk away.
NiMh offers safe moderate performance.
I'd also avoid anything that uses mechanical speed controls of 27Mhz radios.
