A little bit more practice with these models, I've just ordered the Steve Irwin Sea Shepherd kit, with the lasercut detail set.
https://www.papel3d.com/3993-thickbox_default/mv-s...

Contrary to the opinion of the rest of my colleagues, I find this a relaxing way to spend my dinner hour.

It's not perfect by any means, and there are some minor details I decided against adding, as the cut out pieces looked poor
the rigging is not totally complete (there should also be two rope ladders, but the paper versions look awful, and I'm not scratchbuilding them on a practice model)
Some of the smaller pieces were a right pain. The front winch mechanism assembly is made of 29 parts, and is about 8mmx8mm

Looks good to me. The fidelity of the final model obviously depends a lot on the kit designer (they are usually named on the booklet). Both mine so far were by Peter Brandt:

Where does one buy these paper kits? A quick Google didn't turn up any online shops that stock the HMV range.

Edited to add: Oops should have explored the site in the top link!

Normally Amazon for me, although a friend gifted me this one so I'll have to ask where it came from

Was this your first card ship model? I'm looking for a decent beginner model to have a go at. Was thinking about the HMV Hermes as it's listed with a difficulty level of 'Easy'. Any recommendations? I've only ever built plastic model kits before but these look like a different and interesting challenge smile

It's not my first card model, there's a large collection hanging from my son's bedroom ceiling. Canon (the printer peeps) have a decent selection of free ones, and Epson do some great Motorsport themed papercraft.

HMV Hermes you say?

(I'll be honest, that's not a flattering pic either, it's sat on my Gran's mantel and looks a damn site better that that)

That, and this are both a similar degree of difficulty, although this it comes with two tugs, and doesn't allow the construction of the full hull. I had a few issues with the hull warping on the Hermes, but that is probably due to over eagerness with PVA

They're a totally different kettle of fish to plastic modelling, my advice would be a sharp knife, metal ruler, and to score all folds.
I think I paid £8 for the Hermes on Amazon, it's less than two pints you've wasted if you can't get away with it.

Don't bother with the laser cut details etc for your first build.

slight addenda:

Completed the sister ship of this twin pack - an Aunt had admired the previous one, and my latest kit hasn't arrived yet, so I thought I would be nice

I know the rigging isn't complete - but she won't care. boxedinShe's Oldboxedin
I'll try and take a couple of decent pics of Merkur / Volcan together.

Still waiting on the lasercut set for the Steve Irwin (I've got some leave due at work too, so that one might progress at home. _that one_ is for Me, will go on the shelf, so I'm putting extra effort in)
In the meantime, The Son has requested yet another model for his room. I may have bitten off more than I can chew.
I'll leave a teaser here.
