DeLorean Magazine kit build
Discussion
Just saw an ad on the TV, one of these monthly magazine/parts sagas, £8.99 an issue across I think 130 issues, so not a cheap kit by any stretch of the imagaination.
Its a 1/8th scale rendition of the DeLorean , and of course, looks good in the ad, but how do kits offered in such a way tend to stand in the quality stakes?

Half the price, bigger, and much better in all likelihood.

I work in a newsagents and these part works come out from time to time. I've never known anyone complete one, though one fellow got over half way through a model of the Bismark but died before he finished it. One other issue it that if sales fall below a certain level the publishers simply pull the plug, leaving you with a very expensive unfinished model.
This kit is published by Eaglemoss and some of their previous part works have had a few quality issues
but I am told that apparently the components that have arrived so far for this one are of a good standard.
Yes, a few previous part works have not gone to the end, but I believe that if you've subscibed direct from the publishers, you will be refunded if you ask; the same does not apply if you buy via a newsagent.
Some part works have been of good quality, it depends on who actually manufactures the kit;
Kyosho have made some good kits for De Agostini part works.
I think they are all very poor value, people seem to work on the principal that they won't miss a few pounds every week,
but I've seen complete sets of unbuilt parts sold on Flea bay for sensible amounts.

I have a lot of experience with part works as I used to work in a news agents and I have bought some for myself over the years.
First of all I am disapointed that this one is a weekly becasue at that price it is a considerable outlay.
2nd of all, Eaglemoss are pretty renowned for cancelling a series if it doesn't perform well. I started the 3d printer a few years back and it was cancelled at part 6. This wasn't the first that I had started collecting that they cancelled a few months in either so I would never ever buy an eaglemoss publication again as a result.
If you subscribe via post there is a high risk that some parts may arrive damaged, My dad had this on more than one occasion
If you subscribe via newsagent collection you can guarantee at least one issue will never arrive and the newsagent will not be able to order thus rendering your £1000+ model incompletable. If you are lucky it will be a part of little consequence. There was a story of a boy in the news recently who bought every issue of the 3d printer build but 1 crucial issue never arrived so he has a £700 useless pile of bits. I can't find the story now but it was on my local papers facebook.

The above is kind of what I expected but had hoped not to hear because this looks really cool:

If it genuinely does all it says and the quality is decent then £900 isn't totally outrageous.

Did you ever listen to the R4 comedy 'Fags Mags & Bags'? centred on a Glasgow newsagent. There was one episode which focussed on a woman who was about to complete a magazine partwork - the first person in history to do so. They even had a shadowy partwork godfather who was supposed to be Mr DiAgostini.
Very very funny series.

There is a 1/2 scale R2D2 magazine build doing the rounds now as well, but from the DeAgostini group. That also looks tempting as it looks like a quite good replica that is seemingly able to do a lot of what the RC robot in the movie could do.
I would trust DeAgostini far more than I would eaglemoss...pretty sure this was covered on watchdog some years back.......... yes you couldn't finish the models, parts poor quality.
I think there was a young boy who was trying to build a remote control car (think tamiya grasshopper for example)
Poor lad, 2 years on, it still had't turned a wheel and it was only with the BBC's intervention he could get the missing bits.
A toy car expert was asked about the kit and said for say £200-£300 in any model shop, he could have bought the same spec/type of car off the shelf- versus 2 years wait and X pounds buying it as a kit through a magazine.

Yes, but the partwork comes with a free bag of toot. (Allegedly)Half the price, bigger, and much better in all likelihood.
Well maybe I'm the one person who actually finished one as I do have the 1/8 McLaren Mp-4/23 sitting in a display case at work.
I am a few months collecting all the parts for the 1/8 Lamborghini Countach that they do too, though I doubt I'll start that and instead offer it for sale as it seems they are commanded more than even the extornate prices the subscription charged!
Yes you can but a kit in a box for hald that but I did that already!
I must say that DeLorean does look poor in quality. At least DeAgostini got Kyosho to make most of their kits. Not sure who Eaglemoss use!
