RC car for my boy-advice sought please!

Hi all

My lad (turning 10 in a few weeks) has announced that he wants a "drift" radio control car. Problem is we are limited in areas we could use a non off road type and I fear this would lead to disappointment and frustration, so I have pointed out that many many off road buggy type cars could "drift" in a manner that would please him. So....

Not wanting to waste money on a "toy" and instead on a car that has progressive steering and throttle, like the Tamiya units from my "yoof" I have directed him toward the likes of the Grasshopper and Hornet that I know were "proper" RC cars.

I have also cut through the chaff and headed straight for the Jadlam website, as I would prefer to give Russy as a local business my business as it where. (I am in Bridgwater)

I am quite taken with the Tamiya bundells that Jadlam do but do not know much about the other brands nowadays such as the FTX which may slot into the gap of being more than "toys" but not quite so expensive as the Tamiya (in case he puts it in drawer after a week) as looking at those they look pretty good on the website.


Any advice or further options would be appreciated. Thanks all

Can't go wrong with Tamiya, g'hopper and hornet are ok. Nostalgic, reliable and quick - but you could argue you get better performance for less or the same money with less renowned brands.

FTX. Much cheaper than Tamiya, can almost get yourself a RTR brushless car for the price of a Tamiya neo scorcher or something.

Arrma is a new addition and I am very impressed. They do a fantastic stadium truck called the vorteks which is great value. It's very quick, bang up to date and absolutely solid. They use a decent amount of Alu in the chassis, where the Tamiya cars at this price are plastic fantastic.


If you want to spend £100ish get the grasshopper or ftx vantage. Ftx performs better and is 4wd. G'hopper is inferior but has the brand.

If you want to spend £140. Go for Arrma for the cooler looking cars and better performance. Go Tamiya because you just want Tamiya? Arrma options much better at this price point...

Personally I wouldn't spend anymore on a basic brushed truck. See how it gets on first...

I'd stay away from Tamiya if I were you, nostalgia is all that its good for, expensive and very very dated technology...

Thanks for the replies . I have had a good look at the options / budget / places it can be used and I think I will be ordering a vantage in due course Russy , along with a spare battery and a fast charger. Things have certainly moved on since I last looked at RC cars, my boy has been involved in the decision making process as well and having looked at a few videos I think he will be delighted with one.

I do Rc drifting get something like a Sakura d3, loads of options to modify over time.
I use a mst ms01d Vip which are amazing but I think mine cost about £1100 for everything maybe a bit more?
Check out soul Rc in Northampton they know there stuff.

but you need to spend a couple more quid for a better connecter than a piece of chock bloc.

Hi russ.
I am looking for the ftx vantage 1/10 4wd at £99.95 but it says your out of stock.

I have tried the notify me bit but it doesn't seem to work.

Do you have any idea when it's back in stock ? It's for a Christmas present.
