Electric quads - any good?
Discussion
Hi there PH,
This was the closest forum I could find to post this, apologies if it's not appropriate.
My 10 year old son is (naturally) car mad. He loves karting and goes a few times a year. We are moving house and will have enough room for him to have some sort of quad bike/ electric vehicle. We live in SW London, so it's not acres of land - more like 75ft!
We have been looking at the 800w electric quads like this one below.
http://www.rc-hobbies.co.uk/shop/mini-motos-quads/...
They look perfect for quiet, quick and neighbour friendly fun but has anyone got one? Are they sturdy? Is the 32kph top speed realistic? He rides karts that are a lot quicker and we are both concerned that this will be a bit tame and touchingly, he doesn't want me to waste my money on it if it is
I thought about buying 10-15 sessions at the karting track, Daytona instead but does anyone else have any ideas or ideally, actually own one of these electric quads?
Cheers
Jim

My youngest daughter has 1.
It may be slower than a cart, but it has a higher roll center, and far more unstable, so the slower speeds may not be a bad thing.
The turning circle on most models is very poor, as they have no diff.
On the right surface you can get the rear end out, again, due to no diff.
Most use LIPO batteries, make sure you know how to charge, and care for them.
If it's something he wants to try, I don't think you would be wasting your money, as I'm sure he will enjoy it.

That looks well cool though I'm not sure it would be much good in a 75ft garden. If you had "land" i.e. measured in acres then I'm sure a lot of fun could be had. I'm guessing the legalities of running these things on public land is tricky and PC plod may well want to have a word with you if caught, and then there's the issue of insurance in case you accidently run into someone etc.
Really make me wish I had a field or two, we've got some friends in Shropshire who have a far bit of land but the just don't use it, they've got three girls so have got horses but no mechanical stuff.
