Hoping to pick your brains about scale models, being an absolute novice. I use to have a collection of 1:18's from being a kid, and a few years ago sold them all for surprising more than sticker (they were all boxed), and one McLaren actually returned a very healthy amount. As I have a 1:1 scale Porsche GT4 seemingly doing nothing on my driveway, I figured I might get some model cars to stare at inside the house too!

I'm somewhat of an asset man though, so whilst enjoyment of them is important, I'm looking for advice on whether model cars appreciate medium to long term, if I may be so crass to ask such a question (the whole of Pistonheads is about depreciation, so why not here!).

I'd like to start the collection with cars I enjoy the most, and have seen a 1:12 model on a "limited" run of 300, but suspect it already has a mark-up in place. Are 1:12 worth it or is it best sticking to 1:18? Also, are GT-Spirit a good quality make or should I be looking at another brand?

Any general impressions and feedback for a novice hugely appreciated.

That reminds me i've got a tonne of 1:18 model cars all in their original boxes in the attic of my parents house from when I was a kid.

I must look them out and see if they're worth anything.

The majority of models do not appreciate, and no-one knows which ones will until after they do.

But it is fun trying to guess!

If you buy quality 1:18 models you won't go far wrong in terms of them retaining their value.
