Just started my RB6 with added Studio 27 decals and PE set.

Got all of the decals on the Floor last night. I've not done this before so there are a few minor mistakes with the butt joints but softening the decals and conforming them to the shapes it quite a lengthy task.

I'll post more as I crack on. cool

Looks spot on. Is the amber stuff in the kit or aftermarket?

That's in the Studio 27 aftermarket kit.

The material is Pyromeral, its a form of carbonfibre used in very high temp areas without burning. Not nice stuff to work with either.

I see. I'm still puzzling over the type of composite used in various areas of my MP4/6. I'm going to go with a best guess.

A mix of UD (wings), Dyneema (chassis) and 2x2 twill (bodywork) would of been used around that time. I suppose books would be a big help as every part was probably made from slightly different material.

I've got the books but they don't show the detail. There's definitely UD on the wing supports and possibly the inside of the rear wing endplates. Can you even get UD carbon decals? The undertray is the biggest mystery, possibly kevlar for the yellow bits, but from other photos I can see different types of black carbon as well.

Anyway, I won't derail your thread further, sorry.

The underside of the floor would defo be Kevlar. That was before the 50mm step was introduced with the plank.

As for UD, I would experiment spraying a metalic black first and then dragging black paint across the top with a wide brush as that's the only way could simulate it I reckon.

More slow progress.

Most of the carbon decals fitted and parts painted.

Bit more progress.

Started clear coating the body parts. Having a bit of a mare so lots of flatting and respraying going on.

Decided to finish the steering wheel. Need to touch up the yellow a bit more really. Doesn't look that bad with the eyes though.

I also built a scale replica of the pit lane engine cover stand. That just needs a bit of touching up to make it look beautiful.

Love that stand.
This WIP is a master class in decals! Looks fantastic.
Great to be able to refer to the real thing smile - I was lucky enough to have a look round the 'not-so-secret-after-vodaphone-ad' McLaren storage facility (old factory) and they have EVERYTHING they have ever made stacked up - including every front jack design, and probably these trellis as well....

Yeah the F1 pit gear tends to be pretty high quality stuff.
I wanted to keep the cover off of the car when I display it so why not replicate the original stand from the pitlane. biggrin

More progress. Got most of it glued together last night.

Looking pretty good so far although gluing prepainted part together is a challenge.

Neat, tidy little model.
Can I ask how you made the engine cover stand? Have been trying to source something similar in 1:12 scale for one of my F1 models.

I used aluminium welding wire. Its easy to bend with pliers too without breaking.
