I can drive the internet and drink at the same time.
Doesn't really, mix, though, does it...? In answer to the OP, I've had a bit of a go, easier with newer models than old. Sometimes had to compromise on colour or exact spec, & RHD is a drawback for total accuracy; got the GTA in 1/43 & 1/18 in the right colour, too (once the 1/18 gets here...)I've got about 50% (18 of 34) of cars I've owned (including my wife's and company cars) as 1:43 models. Not always a complete match, e.g. mainly colour or a 2 door instead of a 4 door (SAAB 900S). All prominently displayed close to the front door, has initiated a few conversations with visitors as there are 'humble' cars in the cabinet.
A couple I'm missing and would like are Citroen BX 16v, BMW E46 coupe (323) and Land Rover Discover D2 (early & facelift), without paying silly money. For my current car, Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon, I got the model before I collected the car.
I've got a full set, majority are in the right colour too. it does take a lot of searching, especially as I only want good quality models in 1:43, I have sourced models from all over the world to get this collection.
displayed in order of ownership (and no, I haven't owned the cars on the bottom shelf.... I wish!)
since that photo was taken I have also added the current fleet

Ebay/Google is the obvious but honest answer.
Places like Brands Hatch have model shops and there are usually a few stalls/stands set up during events (there were at least four selling models at the BTCC finale at Brands). Transport/Technical museums are also worth a shot.
I bought my girlfriend's Dad a model Mercedes B-Class in the same colour as the one he owns from a euroroute service station in Belgium.

ebay is good for worldwide searches
but also collectors toy fairs are great for model searching. one of the biggest, if you are in the London area, is actually on tomorrow. always a good day out even if you don't find what you are looking for!

This my display, bottom 2 rows are past cars (the E30 M3 needs to be swapped for an E30 325 vanguard I've got) and I've got some more Fiat's a BMW E39 Tourer and a MX5 to put in.
BMW E30 (mine was a grey 325i), Audi A4 Avant (Silver S4), Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon, E36 Tourer (black 328i), Ford Cortina MKIV (I had beige and blue and a blue estate), SAAB 900S (this is 3 door mine was 5 door), Renault R8 (red), Triumph Herald 13/60 convertible (dark blue), Hillman Avenger GLS (white but it was a GLS), Ford Escort XR3i (black), Fiat Panda (black), Original Panda (white), Uno (red).
Next 2 rows up are F1 championship winner and Le Mans winner from the decades of my birth, then Graham Hill winners (F1, Le Mans, Indy 500, F1), some Aston's and Tony Pond tribute.
All 1:43 mainly Minichamp, Vanguard, Vitesse and a few others.

I've tied to do this on many an occasion; trouble is, whenever my real car changes, I lose interest in the past ones and start chasing models of the current one.
Hence my workbench is full of half-finished Hillman Imps, Capris, Cavaliers, Fiesta, MX-5s, 944s, etc. In fact I don't think I've even started on my last 2 or 3 cars yet.
And I'm due to change again soon, so I'll probably never catch up.

I have 1:43 models of all my previous cars (including a Fiat Tempra), with many in the correct colour.
Only one I'm missing is my current car as no one has made a 1:43 Hyundai Coupe, I have a Hyundai Genesis in 1:36 as the nearest I could get. No pics as they are in the loft but I have display cabinets to set up when I re-decorate.
