Spotted in costco Reading this morning. The v8 model engine, now badged as a hayes kit.
Was 40 quid if I remember.
Going back tomorrow to buy it.

Is it a reboxing of the Revell kit?

No idea, but I imagine it is. Any way to tell ( it's now in the boot of the car )

DemonTweeks also appear to be doing it ... certainly the same kit, just cheaper at CostCo

Have a look at some of the larger kit parts or the runners/sprues. They may contain the original kit manufacturer's name or a serial number. If you find any of these, let us know.

Haynes, as I'm sure you know, do not produce model kits. From time to time they will do a deal with a kit manufacture, such as Airfix or Revell and release a kit under their logo.

It isn't the Revell kit.

If the other Haynes engine kit is anything to go by, it will be st.

Revell:

Haynes:

Must admit it looks neater than their 4cyl version. I'll be interested to see some reviews.

why bad ? as a gift for a 14 year old the original 4 cyl eng kit was great. It taught him quite a bit, went together well enough too.
just dont get me started on the aixfix badged jet engine. that was AWFUL !

Most of these type of models are crap. Like a lot of 'technical' toys and models from the past they are hopelessly dated in terms of execution. They promise a lot, but never seem to live up to expectations.

A lot of them have their roots in the 1950s and early 1960s - so the moulds are very old.

And the technology depicted not quite modern.

hmm that's interesting. So what would you suggest as an alternative ? We already have far to many shelves of Technic !

You don't see newly moulded models of such subjects these days. The plastic kit industry covers narrower fields than it did in its heyday of the 50s to the 70s. Back then you got plastic kits of all sorts of things - not just planes, trains, automobiles and tanks.

You could get creepy creatures, birds, historic figures, engines of all sorts, skeletons, transparent women etc. Airfix even released a kit of a Boy Scout!

Buy an old steam engine off EBay and rebuild it?

A bit of a thread revival, but have things moved on since 2013 in terms of model engines?

I'd like to build a mini V8, but a real one working one. Is it possible to buy a kit off the shelf?
The Haynes one looks and sounds terrible.

What models are available now and where can i get them?
Thinking more along the lines of these: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf_bA6MNTtA
Although i'm guessing these were not a kit and instead hand made.

Those Conley V8 engines are a modest $8,000 ! With another $10,000 if you want the supercharger and all the trimmings. Yeah, that's all. I suspect for that you could buy a real (second hand) Ferrari V8 and strip / rebuild it. I don't know of any kits, but I would imagine they wouldn't be a lot cheaper. After all, you basically have to make an entire engine, but without all the efficiencies of scale that car manufacturers have.

oh wow! I didn't know that.
So there is either the lower end of the scale, the likes of Haynes. Or the top end like in the clip, which is £xxxx+, with nothing in between.

That's a shame.
For £400, i found a 3.6l V8 Jag engine on ebay (working)....i wonder if i could make space for that scratchchin

Yeah, that's the in-between! A real engine with (relatively) readily available precision made parts and a community of people who know how to fettle them. Personally, I'd go for a Rover (Buick) 3.5 V8. If all else fails, with a real engine you can always make it into a coffee table.

A Rolls Royce Meteor (that's a RR Merlin engine without the supercharger) costs less than the supercharged V8 kit. Good luck finding an Ikea display cabinet big enough for it though.
