First build for over 20 years and first ever attempt at weathering.

Reasonably pleased but might need another go at the barrel.

Not too knowlegable about AFV's, but this looks very good especially if it's effectively your first AND judging by the nappy bag you've got plenty of child-based distraction. I think weathering on these things is probably a sub-art in it's own right. Are you planning another one (model not child)?

Thanks. To all intents and purposes I'd say it's my first. Certainly the first since I had to take my glasses off to see what I'm doing smile

Next model has been ordered and is possibly a demonstration of how I can be inclined to jump in feet first, this will be my absolute first with anything photo-etched. I have plumped for this :

If that goes well, then pretty much decided that next will be a Scharnhorst to go with it (Z-38 was one of the Scarnhorst's escorts when it was sunk).

Child distraction not been too bad, most done in the evening and kept the 4-year old happy by helping him build these

He's not quite that talented, they are pre-painted and the decals and pre-applied too. Have to say, for £3 each from Modelzone they are mighty impressive. The painted pilot even had a flesh coloured face so they're not just machine sprayed. Clearly another 4 year-old in the far east is even more talented smile

Zero for him to build next weekend.

I like that Hanomag, I am in favour of subtle weathering but these days it's become more "de rigeur" regardless of how the real thing looked

( I also like the destroyer smile I got stitched up in a club comp "lucky dip" for charity and ended up with a Tamiya 1:700 scale AGANO

And I'm finding I rather like not having much control of how it will look at that size

Have fun with that new one, you have done well with your first (?) one

An awful lot of model AFVs end up looking more like cartoons than they do the real McCoy: they're generally comparatively crudely finished, often in the field rather than the factory.

Nice build of the Hanomag.

I too know next to nothing about AFV's but it looks good enough to me.

With the Hanomag the only thing I might have done differently is run a black fine point gel pen into the slot at the base of the vision slots or maybe a 2B pencil sharpened, this would give the look of the armoured glass in them.

Maybe even a little gloss varnish afterwards, but as some gel inks react with varnish that might be an embellishment too far.

But I don't believe that scaled up some of the over weathered AFV models you see around would look right

Less is more

I might just do that perdu before it goes into it's case.

Main problem I see with the kit itself is that the tracks are too short, they should "sag" at the top and not be taught between the front and rear wheels. Might have a look around for either longer ones or a way of lengthening these.

Gloss black or very dark gloss green paint works well for vision blocks, and you should be able to pull the tracks down in a bow with fine fishing line. Photos of the real thing will tell you whether they should be resting on the roadwheels or suspended just above them.

I like the fishing line for the tracks smile. Should be above the wheels but not straight like they are. One extra link would probably do it but it's a single piece, not separate links.

Noticed a set of AFV Club 1:35 articulated tracks for the Hanomag in the LHS this lunchtime, about £12 IIRC.

I'd like it even more if they'd delivered the right one frown. Didn't really want a USS Chevalier. At least they've promised to get the right one in the post on Monday with a pre-paid label to return the wrong one. Other than getting it right first can't ask for much more.

Guess I'll have to spend the weekend on the scenery for the Hanomag. Like the replacement AFV Club tracks but think I'll go for the fishing line (well, probably raid Mrs Stemll's sewing box for some "invisible" thread).

Pics early next week hopefully when it's finished.

That brings back some memories, I built the Hanomag (without the Pak 40) when the model was newly out way back in the mid '70s. I remember driving the owner of the model shop on Dickson Road in Blackpool mental by ringing up every Saturday morning to find out if it had come into stock yet!

There was an article about the model in Military Modelling, I've still got the issue in the loft somewhere.

Does it now just come with one figure? ISTR the original model came with about 4 or so.

{Edit to add - it came with 5 figures: http://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1947&p=2790...}

It still comes with 5 and the Pak came with another 3, just didn't want them.

I've got this one :

Bought it from Bovington tank museum in about 1983. I think it was my first Tamiya kit, still looks good today even though I was only 13 when I built it. Says more about Tamiya than my modelling skills at that time though.

Strangely, the "Greif" lettering on mine is red with a white border. Looks like the later ones were just a white outline. It's also got solid tracks that were designed to look weighted when built.

Greif and Adler were Rommel's personal command vehicles and had modified interiors with extra radios and a fold out bench seat/bunk. At one stage Greif had the lettering on the near side only filled in with red and later both sides, Tamiya gave you both options so you've just built it as it was later in it's life.

OK, so a little later than "next week" but here is the finished model in its diorama (and the lines in the vision slots as per perdu's suggestion)

Oh, and in case anyone notices what else is missing, I've abandoned the 1/700 destroyer as I just cannot see the parts. If I can find a magnifier I can get on with, I might ressurrect it
