I think the best technical set was a verson of the mobile crane from several years ago, but now it's worth £100's.

It's nothing like as versatile as it used to be either. So many parts now can only be used on one or two models, and it seems like if they can make a single part that saves ten others, they will. Shame becasue even if it's cheaper that way it does defeat the object a little bit.
I've been promising myself a big Technics set every Christmas for the last five years. I think this year will be the year.
However Technic seems to have gone all strange since they got rid of the old-school "girder" pieces. Now all you seem to have as these new rounded girders that you can attach a pin to or run an axle through, but not another girder or a plate as they don;t have any studs.
The a-pillars on that Unimog are made of these pieces. You'll find that that chassis probably is, too.

There are still some of the old school stackable girders, but I know what you mean.
The irony of it for me is that it seems all the smaller (cheaper) sets - use the bespoke pieces, and the bigger sets seem to use way more standard pieces - I guess this is something to do with plastic moulding ecomomics and its easier to make shapes on the bigger sets out of standard pieces.
Anyway - the big sets are now way over £100 and are bought by adults that aren't likely to ever take them apart to make anything else from them - and the kids that will, get bought the smaller sets are limited by the bespoke pieces - really should be the other way around.

I'm a big Lego Technic fan and have a large number of sets, although most of these are now in the loft, as I don't have the space to display them in my study since starting my own business last year.
However, I do still have a couple on display above my desk, and have also just bought the new Unimog but haven't yet had the time to crack open the box.
I'll probably end up selling my older kits due to lack of space, so if anyone is interested in buying them drop me a message and I'll let you know what I've got.

Recently treated myself to some classic Technic Lego. Latest purchase was the 853 car chassis. Annoyingly it isn't quite complete so I need to go back to ebay and find some bricks. Also want to re do the 'engine' with a proper crank layout for an inline four and maybe fit a differential. Sad, I know but working details are part of the appeal of Technic. Once I'm done with it, however, I think it'll have to go to clear up some space.
At some point I'd like the 8880 (I think) set which managed to include 4WD and 4WS and the latest big Lego car. Sadly both these seem to cost more than I can justify spending at the moment.
The Unimog looks awesome too.

You might know, but there is a great site here that lists parts included in the original sets.
