Amazing stuff!! I have decided now mid forties to look into this Warhammer malarkey! My son might be interested soon and I do enjoy scale model building.
It’s intimidating and seems utterly complex. Anyway I ordered an ultimate starter set let’s see how it goes. I read the introductory set is better if I have never played but I went straight for the big box….
Any basic pointers to get started in the hobby both painting and playing? Just want to play with my son or friends nothing more.
My kit should arrive next week the. I will have a lot of reading and understanding to do….

Good luck!
First off, building. Decent side cutters, and the citadel mold line remover is superb. Revell contact pro glue (blue/yellow with needle nozzle - little goes a long way).
Painting - pick a scheme you like, you'll be doing a lot of it! Look up the 'slapchop' method - basically, prime black (I really like army painter primer), then use cheap makeup brushes off amazon to provide 'highlights' across the primer. Then, contrast paint - nice thin coat and you get a great effect with fairly little effort.
As for playing - I'll have to pass on that, don't play 40k anymore (stick to 30k, titanicus and X Wing - although really looking forward to Micro Marines (Legions imperialis)). Basic advice would be to start with fairly small games, then build up. Kill Team is also a great "skirmish" level game, should just need the rulebook to be able to play that as well.

One way to look at the hobby from the outside is to break it down into 3 parts:It’s intimidating and seems utterly complex. Anyway I ordered an ultimate starter set let’s see how it goes. I read the introductory set is better if I have never played but I went straight for the big box….

1) Story of the in game universe ("lore")
2) Building and painting the models ("modelling")
3) playing the game ("gaming")
You can pick and choose which part(s) interest you and your son. Many people mainly game, some only build and paint and some do a bit of everything.
Is there a Games Workshop store need you? They are a very expensive to buy from (other stores offer up to a 20% discount) but could be good to give you and your son an intro to building, painting and gaming.
I went to my local games workshop with a view to pick up a couple of bits and a bit of advice from the guy running it, turns out he also runs the local table top club, so I went along to one of the club nights and found out some of my friends have been in the hobby for some time!
I'm enjoying the painting much more than I expected I would, all the little fiddly and precise bits... I haven't played a game yet but spectated one, so I'm now building a sufficient army to get involved...

Thanks. There is a GWS close to me I will pop in soon. Will start reading the story to have an understanding of eras, etc.
I understand each faction has his own game rules?
Start easy and see how it goes!
It's 2023, no-one reads any more!I understand each faction has his own game rules?

Seriously though there is a massive online community covering the hobby.
And you've got the right idea, start with the basic outline of events, choose a faction or two that interest you and go from there.
There are 40 odd years of books to dive into if/when you want to!
Don't worry too much about rules at this stage, you'll pick them up as you go along.

Indeed, thanks for the youtube suggestion. I might also look into the black library. I enjoy this type of stuff to read so not hard by I guess there are 40years or stuff to catch up.
Thanks guys it’s encouraging!
A great intro into the 'universe' would be one of Dan Abnett's series. Thanks guys it’s encouraging!
Gaunt's Ghosts is superb - the story of an Imperial Guard (regular army joes) regiment.
Eisenhorn/Ravenor is very good too. Little bit more esoteric and a bit disconnected from the gaming side, but still great reads.
The Space Marine Battles series are pure 'bolter pron' (big battles with the Space Marines being their usual semi-invincible selves) but perhaps closest in vibe to an actual tabletop game.
Welcome to the hobby, let’s start with the basics.
The Warhammer TV YouTube channel has some really well produced, easily to follow beginner videos that you and your son should be able to follow along with. Once you’ve mastered the basics there is a galaxy of content on YouTube for you to learn intermediate and advanced hobby techniques, from kitbashing to weathering.
When you’re ready to play your first game I’d recommend printing off this quick start guide the Warhammer Community team have made available.
https://www.warhammer-community.com/wp-content/upl...
For beginner games you have two armies in the Starter Box you can at least play through with them.
Rules are a little complicated, normally each army has its own book called a Codex, this contains all your armies rules as well as background, art and painting guides. Some armies don’t have these available yet in the new edition so GW offer slimmer down versions called Indexes. The link below is really useful as it also has points (needed for army construction) and is where any updates or changes to existing rules are posted.

The third and final area to get involved with is the lore/background and oh boy you better buckle up. The story writing for 40K goes all the way back to the mid 80s with Rogue Trader and at various points over the decades people have gone back and built upon the skeleton laid out in the 90s. The hard copy of the core rule book has introductions to all the core races and brief timeline of major events. It would be worth reading up on all the armies before committing to any purchases as they all have their different styles and traits and it’s a lot easier to collect, build, paint and play with an army that resonates with you.
Lastly, don’t worry about winning too many games. It’s an incredibly deep ruleset and people have been playing for decades, so there’s a lot of catching up to do.
The last couple of years there has been a heavy focus on ‘competitive’ play which in my view has been a massive detriment to the hobby in general. Try to remember it was built as a role playing game to tell table top stories, and have fun with it!
Once again, welcome to hobby!

Some of these posts about intros to the world are still pretty advanced. Here's a really really dumbed down list.
In the 40k universe you have to accept a few things.
God's are real
Psychic powers are real
Orks are similar to orks you likely know about but have space faring
Elves are similar but are space faring
Dwarfs... erm thats a touchy subject we don't speak about dwarfs until we just kinda found some randomly
Most of mankind is like mad max Level or worse
Warp travel is not like star trek or star wars its more like event horizon but with wormholes...
You know the movie aliens? Well there's a faction of them that make the aliens look like a friendly collie dog.
Infact I think I've just complicated it more with the above...
