Ordered this just before lockdown:

At the same time ordered some upgrades which still haven't arrived yet so dug out one of my old tamiyas and stuck the new battery and receiver in and it works:

Its been a bit used and abused. Tyres have cracked so have ordered some new ones:

Having fun bombing it round the drive like I was a kid again.
Whilst waiting for the other parts to arrive I have started a Tamiya 1:12 model bike as well. Might put progress on that in another thread.

Well it was, but a teenage me saw that it got pretty bashed up..... Would love a new "display" one but can't find one anywhere now with original decals.

Mostly been flying recently. The warmer weather and when it isn't too windy. Have been in and around RC for decades now. The planes are definitely more fun than the cars. Although I did enjoy out door off road 1/10th racing back in the day.

Mostly fly UM/UMX models:

Had a near miss with Mosquito recently. Broken prop in midair. Managed to get her down safely though.

Do still dabble with RC cars too. Mad Bull I built last year.

Raced buggy’s in my youth but now, 25 years later (when we are allowed out again) spend my time with my bro and nephew bashing about in the woods and bmx tracks. The new stuff is so much hardier and pretty water proof, and usually all three end up like this.

Reminds me of my first ever race aged about 8. All the cars were so covered in mud at one point after a collision I wasn’t sure which car was mine when it was put back on track they were all just mud coloured.

Learnt three lessons that first weekend for wet whether racing.

1) Use different coloured wheels front and back so it’s easy to identify your car.

2) Spray the knobbly tires with wd40 before the race. It helps prevent claggy mud sticking to them.

3) The best and most expensive lesson learned. I learnt, electronics and water don’t mix. My futaba electronic speed controller went pop smoke coming out of it.

Old timers solution who happened to realise it was our first time and we didn’t have a clue what we were doing

Ballon two tie wraps and some vasaline. Insert the electronics into the balloon. Put on zip tie with wires coming out the balloon. Pack the neck of the balloon with vasaline. Apply second zip tie. Electronics were then waterproofed. Also if you used a plastic screwdriver you could still alter the null, acceleration and braking pots without tearing the ballon. (Only used in wet weather racing.

I've just dug this out of a box in the workshop. It hasn't turned a wheel in at least 12 years. First task is to see if the battery will charge.

My re-re Scorcher, enjoying itself on Bournemouth beach shortly after being built:

Away to start my re-build.

It's 40 odd years since I built my original one so looking forward to it.

Although I had a quick check of parts and instructions and it seems more complicated than I remember biggrin.

Let the memories begin.

Be very careful - that's worth a few bob now!

Yellow one is 4wd, green one is 2wd. Both hilarious fun. 4WD one will do a backflip from stationary, so I've not fitted the spare wheel to the tailgate!

306 doesn't get run anymore - such is the rarity (and time it took to apply all those stickers...)

Another fun one, Brushless Grasshopper! Mad fast and handles like crap, but that's the fun of it!

Anybody on here old enough to remember before electronic speed controllers. My first model car had a ceramic pot wire wound resistor that used a standard steering servo to move the pick off arm up and down the resistor windings.

I’m now feeling very old. Although I am only 40ish and they weren’t common even when I was 6/7 years old but my first one had such a setup. I’ve been trying to find pictures of the setup but alas digital cameras didn’t even exist.

If anyone had a picture of such a setup I would love to see it. It’s been along time since I last saw one

Edited to add

Technically it’s a rheostat not a resistor I believe.
