Hi all you ovlov drivers, Im thinking seriously of getting an 850 estate.
Im bang in the middle of a seriously vicious divorce, and Ive got plenty of gear to move around. Watching a film last week [keeping mum] the main car in it is a volvo estate. I thought, yeah, all right, not too shabby. And the bonus being that my ex wife fecking hates them. Everybody wins, Well I do anyway.
Don't really want to spend anything more than about £1-2k on one, money's very tight, she wants the lot,LOL, so I thought Id slip in here and ask the volvo massive for advice.

I fancy an 850GLT or a T5 R whats the difference?
Dark Green
With beige leather, black if the car was right.
What do I look for when buying?
Cams, leaks, 'box issue, driveshafts, previous damage, rust, brakes, suspension, catalytic convertors, Ive no idea.

A precis of the pitfalls to buying would be nice, and whoever posts Ill send a virtual pint of Skol to.

Skol.

this looked nice at £1250

The T5R has the higher power engine and probably higher insurance as a result so you might want to check that out before you go shopping.
You should also be able to consider the V70 phase one models which were made up to March 2000 most of these will be under £2K except well kept R versions.

Make sure you know when the Cam belt was last changed, any doubt and get then done ASAP otherwise the engine is quite strong, turbo oil return pipes tend to leak when the seal fails, look under the rear of the engine for signs of a leak, headlight reflectors tend to tarnish and become useless on the V70 and are considered an MOT fail when they get beyond a certain point otherwise decent cars in general. Most of these models tend to chew the front tyres if driven hard, I got around 17K out of my last set of fronts.

99/00 V70 had a fly-by-wire throttle system that is prone to fail (read up on Volvo ETM issues, there is plenty on the internet about this one) and the auto box on the 99/00 cars can be troublesome.

Saying all the above, I have had my 00 phase one V70 for two years, the ETM packed up cost me £330, the headlights were changed (by me) as they were as effective as candles and the thermostat jammed open, in the two years its done 33K so I don't thinks thats too bad on running costs - Mike

I highly recommend the V70 T5.
I bought a '96 estate.
Mahooosive service history.
Manic on full boost.
32mpg on the M1.
All for Nine hundred pounds.
Mines a stop gap but would be a keeper otherwise.

Spoof

I bought an 850 T5 for £500, it comfortable, fast and most importantly, you can park anywhere you like without having to worry what Doris and Child is parking next to you.

They're brilliant, and I prefer its character to both my P1 & P2 V70R.

i got an 850t5r last summer - early one being 1995 - so classic insurrence -all in £250 for 5000 miles.
now need to buy more mileage, but i'm not getting anywhere near 35 mpg. With rica tune , 18 t turbu and more gizmos than BACK TO THE FUTURE its great fun. Also as stable as the tvr /911 in use at 100 mph +.

170.000 miles still feels fresh ( a bit smelly though- or would that be the occupants)

The way 850's are specced is quite interesting. Basically the way you used to buy volvos was to choose an engine and then choose a spec so you could have a T5 S (base spec with most powerful engine) or at the other end of the scale say a 2.0 10v CD (least powerful engine with highest spec)
V70's were slightly different as Ford had taken over and dealer quotas moved in. I've had loads of them and my company have serviced hundreds of them over the years. My choices well I had a t5 s which was a great car with a simple spec. For the best noise go for the awesome 2.0 20v engine - revs higher and much more freely than a t5 - no ball of fire with just 143bhp but a lot of fun and sound like an Audi quattro at full chat.

T5-R is over priced and over rated - look great yes but they actually have the same engine as a t5 but with an over boost function on the ecu map giving you an extra 15bhp for around 30seconds.

Manual 850R have bigger turbos and a viscous coupling in the differential.

I currently run a 98 v70 t5 which are far smoother and less lively than an 850

Ancient thread resurectioin...

I have a 1995 850 Estate 2.0 SE (not a car for going anywhere in a hurry in!) knocking on 193000 miles, getting stung for insurance by sounds of things as I asked about classic insurance and it was a no go so paying more than what the car is worth!

Where did you get your classic policy from (or is mine not a classic since its not a T5 etc!?)
