Hi, these are a common failure come MOT time judging from other peoples experiences on here and elsewhere. One of the bushes on the inner side of the arm has a split. The car also tends to tramline a little on poor surfaces so they need replacing really.

I've been quoted £300 all in using genuine Volvo parts to replace them both, does this sound reasonable?

Quite common on the V70 and the S60 when it gets to higher miles. My 06 V70 showed signs @ 90k of starting to wear. My new (old) S60 is overdue them and its covered 117k now. At the moment its wandering all over the road and corners are a bit dicy.

Its booked in Volvo next week for £370 fitted for the two control arms, so if you are going dealer route it seems reasonable. Indie might do it cheaper, but pervesly and I will probaby regret saying this, I trust the Volvo dealer to do it properly.

Hope that helps, others might come along who have gone via the indie route.

Sorry I should have said, its £300 all in at an indie but using OE parts. Mine is on 95k miles now so they are probably due but it passed an MOT in January so I don't think its critical just yet.

Ive just had 2 arms done @ a Volvo indy. £230 all in. Mines a 2003 S80 T6. I was chuffed with the cost although, i have put £800 through the guys till in the last 2 wks getting my car all sorted for MOT as they seem to be a lot more stringent over here in NI than on the mainland. Do they check handbrakes on automatics for MOT over in England? I bought my car in Preston last yr with a full yrs ticket on it but the handbrake needed pads, shoes + discs done even though i NEVER use it as i just use park!

The lower bushes are a known fault on a few volvos, on my c70 2000, i changed both the lower arms when i got it, just to be sure.
Another is the top engine mount, replacement is only £20 (ish) for a genuine volvo one, easy to change to.

£300 using oe parts, is not bad at all mate.

Sounds reasonable to me - genuine parts the ones to use - cheapo bits are a false economy.

It's not just volvos now that have common suspension faults but all cars thanks to the "superb" quality of British roads now
