Hi guys, hope you can advise on this one.

I have an xc90 d5 on 56 plate that is costing me a fortune in rear tyres. The tyres wear on the outside edges only so by the time they are bald on the outside there is still about 4mm - 5mm of tread on the inside edge. The tread is probably legal over 2/3 to 3/4 of the tyre width. My main dealer has done the 4 wheel alignment twice and on each occasion I had new tyres fitted. But both times the rear tyres have worn unevenly. I am now faced with needing new tyres again (ie for the 3rd time).

Do XC90's have a reputation for this?

Could it be caused by something other than the wheel alignment?

One of the things that raises my suspisions about the dealer aligning the wheels is that when I compare the reports from the two times they have done the work it appears they have adjusted to completely different settings. I assumed that the manufacturer would recomend a standard setting and dealer would align the wheels to the standard? Or does the mechanic guess the adjustment to reflect wear on my tyres?

When I took the car in the second time and said - "look at the wear on these tyres - how could this happen again after you aligned the wheels when these tyres were fitted?" I was told - "well you could have driven over a pothole the day you left the workshop and it would knock the alignment out again".

So I'm about to fit a 3rd set of rear tyres and ideally would like these ones to wear evenly but I'm not sure what best to do. Any help gratefully received.

Also - I have always replaced with OEM Contis - should I switch to another brand?

Cheers

Marc

Try the Eco tyre settings, which is mentioned in your handbook, but I believe is around 38psi.

Thanks,

So unven tyre wear could be down to tyre pressure not alignment?

Do you increase or decrease the pressure to move the tyre wear across the tread?

To be honest I'm not really sure but I have run my 2010 XC90 tyres on the eco pressures and have got just over 20,000 miles on the original Conti's, and they still have some life left in them.
Everything I've read about uneven tyre wear on these cars seem to suggest increasing the pressures first.
