I drive a '67 1800 S and in dark moments I have also thought about a V8.
There have been a couple of conversion:

The guy put a 302 V8 from a Cobra in it!!
Also this gentleman in the states is about to put an LS2 (IIRC) V8 in his. Although he takes the project one step further, but have a look yourself:

You'd need a different rear axle for sure, and a different gearbox of course. Also you'd have to build your own engine mounts, etc... There is no such thing as a 'V8 Kit for a Volvo 1800'. This can become very costly and next to unpayable if you have to pay someone to do it.
I myself am just about to install a new engine in mine. But 'only' a blueprinted and bored out B20 (known as a B22). More than fast enough to embarrass modern euroboxes and also to annoy old 911 drivers (and other drivers of standard, fast cars of that period) at classic car meetings. I would love to put a V8 under the bonnet of a 1800, but it would have to be a second one as I don't want to mess up my first car.
ETA:
I have just seen that you have some experience with classic motoring. A fine collection of cars you own/owned! If you are serious about this, I'd suggest asking the guys on www.volvoforums.org.uk Loads of experience regarding modifing old Volvos! Cheers

hi
thanks for the info
what power will your B22 put out
i knew a marcos with one of those!
will your car run LSD. are there lsd's that can be easily sourced for the p1800?
i love so many classics, so my car history is varied, but ive always liked the p1800 and it was my Dads first car when he was living in Lebanon in the 60s!
thanks

150-160 at the fly. I could have gone for more extensive head work, but as I'm only a poor student of architecture I ran out of money. I concentrated on a completely balanced engine; uprated clutch; lightend flywheel and only a slightly polished head.
Are you thinking of a bored out Volvo B20 (to 2.2l -> B22) or of a Honda B22?
As for the LSD. All 1800 came with a "LSD". It was a Dana Spicer type wich isn't a full on LSD. There are sevral proper LSD to chose from. Most seem to favor a Truetrac LSD. There are other good ones wich I can't remember right now. I'll keep you posted..
