Hi ,
It says in the service schedule that the pollen filter should be changed every year, what happens if this is not done, does it affect the performance. we change the air ,oil and diesel filter on schedule.

I'd have a guess that the pollen filter is for filtering the air into the cabin and to help people with hayfever and the like...but that is a total guess.
If I'm right though, then no it doesn't need changing as reguarly

when it gets clogged up it will start to restrict the air flow and put a lot of pressure on the fan , finally destroying it.

I wondered why my fan became noisy , took the filter out and the fan screamed away at double speed.

It is quite a cheap part and I am sure its something you can down on own - my old V70 had the carbon filter thingy so I used to get it changed to avoid it clogging.

They can also retain a large amount of moisture which mists the front window up on the inside when the car is parked in the sun, at least when changing it you get an idea if its soaked to start looking for the blocked drain under the panel the wiper arm spindles come through (quite a common fault) - Mike
