buying guide new shape S80
Discussion
In the past I have owned 3 S80 T6's. Never had a problem with any of them. Service cost main dealer with all has been an average of £350 per year. I averaged approximately 27mpg, give it some boot 22mpg, motorway 30mpg. You can pick good ones up for very little money. Saw a S80 V8 going for £13k cheap as chips. I run a 2005 V70T5 but would love an S80 V8.
I thought no one owned any new shape S80s on the PH!
thanks for the replies. i am thinking of either ther 3.2 or the V8..
how bad/good is the V8 ?!
what i'm interested in is
mpg (town/mtorway)
servicing
reliability (electrical)
and mechanical bits to look out for .
i'd imagine the 3.2 to be abit more fuel efficent than the V8?
cheers

In mid 2008 I bought a 2006 S80 4.4 V8 with just 7K miles, from a Volvo main dealer for just £14K, bare in mind that this car was £47K list when new! It was an SE Lux and specced with just about every option, inlcuded Nav, keyless, etc etc.
I ran it for about 6 months and sold for £12.5K so not too bad I thought. That said, nobody wanted to do a deal on it at all and I had some very insulting offers before p/ex'ing it back to the Volvo dealer I bought it from!! If you buy one, make sure you like it as you'll be pretty much stuck with it!
As far as reliability is concerned it's hard to say - I ran mine from 7K miles to maybe 20K ish miles and in that time it was absolutely perfect and I didn't spend a penny on it - what they're like when they're older I have no idea.
Good points:
Very relaxing to drive, very comfortable and effortless power. Makes a very nice noise (especially when cold)( the V8 is a Yamaha designed unit I believe). All V8's are 4wd and auto so very much a cruiser. It will go round corners but it is a long long way away from being vaguely sporty!!
Bad points: VERY thirsty. Round town I would get 14mpg ish and on the motorway very low 20's. Never ever saw better than about 26mpg.
As a competitor to say an Audi A6 or Merc E Class I'd go for the Volvo without a thought, especially when you consider what a bargain they are.
Feel free to ask me anyhting specific.

Wow i'm suprised by the fuel consumption.. that isn't what i was expecting. My wife drives our jag purely around town, that returns 19/20mpg (sitting in traffic 17mpg), and knocks on the door of 30mpg on a motorway run.
I think i might have to pass! due to lack of reviews, the 3.2 might be a better bet.
cheers

Don't forget it's AWD!
Also I live in the pennines and it is very hilly round here so I generally don't do well on economy.
That said, have a look at the official Volvo s80 economy figures. IIRC the lower one is 11mpg!!
i've had a good read of the V8 model. It does seem like a lovely car. I think issue is going to be the mpg. Misses will be driving it purely around town, so i can't be paying for 15mpg all the time. Also I live in the pennines and it is very hilly round here so I generally don't do well on economy.

Reading around the 3.2 seems to a much nicer option (not fast) with acceptable fuel consumption.
Cheers
