Looking at V/S40.
Discussion
Hi Guys,
I am currently in the process of looking for a reliable car for a weekly commute of 300miles.
After researching through the forums, I found the Volvo to be an excellent choice.
I am currently 21 with 1 year NCB with Churchill (Although having driven for 3 years already, previously a named driver).
Can you guys please recommend which engine or litre size I should be looking for if I wanted it to be economical yet be rather comfortable and nice to drive for motorway commutes?
I have a budget of 1.5k - 2k.
Cheers!

I have the 1.8 auto 116k and faultless
on a steady run at 60 it did 40mpg
normal driving mid to high 30s
on V40 watch for broken rear springs (v common)
1.9 is a renault engine, these seem to command far more money
I have not heard anything bad about auto versions plus spares are plentiful with loads being broken on Ebay.
avoid 1.8i ones as they are the Mitsubishi engine that should really be run on 100 octane and suffer with needing a de-coke as the mileage gets up around 80k>

for the ££ you will be hard pressed to find better VFM
all my opinions but after 2years of having one it has been ideal.

+1 - Decent performance and easy on the juice. My mrs has this in a v40 and its a pokey enough for some b road hoonage plus comfortable motorway miles. returns 35 to 40 mpg
Failing that either I'd prob go for a 1.8 as an all rounder (Volvo lump, not the Mitsubishi sourced GDI)
I've done some reading about and for those that are wondering the same question;
I think the way to determine between the normal 1.8 Volvo Lump and the 1.8 Mitsubishi Lump is by looking for the badge at the rear of the car.
Mitsu-lumps are badged as 1.8i, and they also have 'GDI" across the rocker cover, whereas the Volvo-lump does not have the "GDI" across the rocker cover.
Hope this helps if anyone else is searching for the same answers!

so which is the better one to go for then? the Mitsubishi or the Volvo powerplant?
I havent read anything bad about the Volvo-lump, so you may guess that most of the problems that have cropped up and the fact that replacing the GDI injector cost north of 1000pounds, I would steer well clear of the GDI!!
Probably gonna purchase a 1.8 S40 today Really excited to become a first time Volvo owner!

Yep thats how to spot a non volvo engine S40.I had a S40 1.6 xs for nearly 3 years and was faultless, changed the oil every 12 months passed every MOT, sold it
Then brought a focus ST170.. big mistake so sold that 3 months later and brought another S40 a 1.8 xs, but now i fancy a T4....
