Hi Guys

Having issues with my x reg volvo v40 in that its hunting at idle, fine when driving and when cold idleing, but when at normal temp it idles between 150 - 800rpm and will sometimes stall. Don't believe its a GDI engine but any advice very welcome

Cheers Mark

Sounds like the Idle Control Valve - they're quite prone to gunking up, but a very easy/quick fix.

volvo lump:
Earlier Model: (minus engine cover):
later model:
inlet manifold on the front of the engine(4 flutes)

GDI Lump:

Exhaust manifold heat shield on the front

Hi guys,

Hi had a very similar.

The battery went flat on my v40 1.8 GDi with 109000 miles which I have had for 2 years. I don't put any more than 3000 miles on it a year

Charged the battery and she started, then died within about 10 seconds. kept trying, she just would not idle. Completely drive-able if i kept my foot on the accelerator. Sounded like it was being starved of air. It had always tried to hunt for revs when i first got it, though it never bothered me or caused a problem

Took the manifold and throttle body off to find out they were completely gunked and coked up.

Got some carb cleaner and gave the whole inlet system a good clean right down to the ERG valve (exhaust gas recirculator) I can't explain how mush Sh*t come out of the whole system. The ERG recirculates 30% of exhaust gasses rather than the 10% other cars re-use in an atempt to be a little "greener".

The job from a garage would be about £500 but with 3 hours time, some effort and a £5 can of carb cleaner.

Now she idles high (about 1500) but i am confident the computer will work it all out as it has dropped form 2000

Just a bit of attention will sort out the issue!

Disconnect the battery leave for 10 minutes to reset the ECU, reconnect, start car without touching the throttle and leave it for around 5 mins idling. Should sort it
