V70 T5 GEARBOX
Discussion
Sadly, my 2002 workhorse has thrown a message ie; 'Transmission Requires Urgent Service'. When I called an Auto Transmission Specialist he told me that, I was lucky to have reached 139000 miles on the original unit!!!Is that true, or is he spinning a yarn, trying to sell me a new gearbox?
Has anyone had a unit go on them and if so, are there any recommendations as to where to get it fixed?

Try changing the fluid first.
You can check whether it needs changing by pulling the dipstick out. The fluid is cherry red when new and goes black when burnt/contaminated. Check if it smells burnt.
Volvo don't chnage the fluid as part of their service schedule so even if the car has FSH it has done 140k or so on the same fluid!
Mine has done 207k now and the box started acting the tt when it got hot, (Harsh 2-3 shifts and Flares between 3-4) but changing the fluid seems to have sorted it.

Had the same happen to mine, you have to flush the box to ensure all the old oil is changed. You use quite a lot of fluid.I have made my own flush kit to make this an easy task and bought a bulk load of fluid as Volvo want a fortune for it,I thick about £18 a litre!.Let me know if you need any as I have some left.(think i paid £8 a litre)

You need a special ATF for it. JWS3309 spec. I got some from Parkers for £10.49 a litre. I've read that Saab or Vauxhall dealers sell it a bit cheaper. You need about 8-10 liters for a full flush.
We are Volvo specialists and have loads of autos turn up with slipping boxes and faults - around 85% are cured with an oil service the rest with a second hand ecu replacement in the last year we've had to replace 1 with a knackered box but it was an L plate 850 with circa 300k on the clock - get a second opinion first
