Volvo V70R - Talk to me
Discussion
Right, I'm feeling motivated to get myself a decent student job for next year, should hopefully have one lined up for summer 2011 which will earn me over double what I've managed this year... I want a new car, something different, something with a bit of prowess, something a bit special and quick. I'd like a V70R as my Dad turned one down when they were new and I've been a fan since. If I were to sell my current car, I should be able to afford a fairly decent example, with said job and my usual job to top myself up, I should be able to run one, what I want to know is..:
Reliability?
Part prices - Expensive?
Common Issues?
FWD rather then an AWD as I could do without the possibility of driveshaft issues
I'm not fussed either way with a manual or automatic, though which is likely to be the more economical in town of the two?
It'll be almost a year until I'd be able to get one, if I can, Ph1, 2 or 3, whatever is the best I can get for my dollar at the time!
Any info would be very much appreciated, thanks!

My experience is with the 1997-2000 type of Volvo (specifically the '97/'98 varaints).
Get yourself over to http://forums.t5d5.org and have a browse around, all relevant knowledge is there (along with our special brand of ascerbic wit and humour).

Reliability?
Should be fairly bulletproof. If it drives fine and sounds ok then it probably is.Waugh-terfall said:

No. Genuine parts are (usually) the best option and can be had at excellent discount from FRF Volvo in Swansea or MRG Chippenham. Simon from FRF is a frequent poster on the Volvo forums (username Rufe) and offers a great postal service.Waugh-terfall said:

The engine breather system (PCV) can often be found to be knackered but is fairly easy and cheap to sort out. AWD system. Get yourself over to http://forums.t5d5.org and have a browse around, all relevant knowledge is there (along with our special brand of ascerbic wit and humour).
Thanks guys, AWD has been out for me from the start, though I could just remove the prop-shaft...
Was thinking about this last night whilst trying to sleep, my current car will be hard to sell without a cambelt change, if I run it for another year (it's a December 2002 with nearly 62,000mi) without changing the belt I'd be a very lucky man. If my Dad were to have the belt changed and then I sell it, it'd be quite a waste, so now I'm in two minds about this If I'd bought a car with a cambelt change already done I'd not have this selling issue!
That's my impatience Richard

I bought a manual '97 V70R earlier this year and have just taken it on a 2000 mile round trip to the South of France, fully loaded up with family. Brilliant thing IMHO - didn't seem to drive much differently fully laden to when it was empty and returned about 27mpg on average (29 indicated on the computer). Just gave it a service and new brake disks and pads all round before we went.
I'm using it daily for work at the moment while I decide whether to keep it!

I've actually only got the pictures from the ad from which I bought it earlier this year - must get it out to a good location and take some more as it does look good when it's polished up!
That's well tasty - looks like you need a new rubber seal on your oil cap (either that or a better aim with the can! ;-))y2blade said:
