Hi All,
I have been lurking in the volvo classified for a while now.
I blame SOWT. Since I started looking at the articles on them I never knew I lusted for a trusty luxury barge in the form of those Merc and BMW's.
I had never thought about volvos until my father in law , who is volvo loyal ( V70's XC70's and C70's ), encouraged me to buy a V40 2.0 SE Estate as my family wagon. I really enjoyed the car, loved the ride and I am looking to get myself another one. The one I have been looking at is
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1818114.htm
Now I have been reading the various forums about what to look for in 850's and I do like this one, seems a modestly modifed and well looked after car. The ad tells me a lot that I need to know as a questioning buyer, and because its in South Wales, I can actually get to see it. So I was hoping that those of you whom are more volvo headed than myself may advise me on if you think it could be a good car to own.
I am not sure on the price though... . I'll be moving from a 1tr fiesta to perhaps this volvo. I am trying to feed my lack of decent motor crisis.
I have emailed the chap but no response as yet! The tax is due soon, it doesn't mention when the MOT expires and I would have thought it could need another cambelt change. what do you chaps think ?
Cheers
KJ

Looks very clean indeed - Has R wheels (Very Very valuable option these days) Coming from a Fiesta this will be lightnening quick and solid - I love mine dearly always passes it's MOTs too. Check the master cylinder for leaking (rust staining on the servo) Top engine mount for splits, Do an auto box slip test, Cambelts are mega cheap to sort on 850's (From experience one of the easiest cars to change it on) On test drive, temp should sit dead on halfway and not move from there. Check the rear discs (can be manky)check the bottom wishbone bushes at the front and the front tyres for wear on the inner edge. Occasionally power steering racks can leak. Check the dash lights - The lambda Sond light should go out on start up (upside down green Y in an orange light) and the ABS light should light up on starting and go out shortly after. The car will perform an ABS diagnostic test as you drive away (you'll hear the brakes make a slight noise) shortly after pulling away - this is normal
Should be no rust anywhere - they simply don't rust unless they have been stuffed and badly repaired.
Generally they are very very good considering the age of them now.
Defo go for it - you'll not regret it
