Volvo S40 T5 R Design opinons please!
Discussion
There is already a discussion just below this about the R design in general, so you can could try reading that regarding seats, ride etc.
As for the T5, I've never driven one I'm afraid, but I have heard good things about it, and yes, fundamentally, it's the same engine as in the focus, so will be pretty rapid. Not sure what the handling and torque steer will be like though. I think the S40/V50 don't handle quite as well as a focus, but they're nice and solid and fairly comfortable in general.

I considered going for the T5. However, I ruled it out due to the fuel consumption. In my opinion, the D5 was the more sensible (performance) choice. As with the T5, the D5 engine has a nice note and the defficiency in performance is insignificant in everyday use. Unfortunately, it appears that Volvo have discontinued the 2.4 D5 in the S40/V50, but I believe there is a new 2.0 D5 coming out?? If you want more performance from the D5, then there are tuning companies who can re-map/chip them to produce over 220bhp.
AS posted earlier these current small Volvo T5s share their engines and transmissions with the Focus ST...the whole platform in fact. They are just Focus's with less chavy clothes and certainly none the less for that.
You can increase the T5 engine outputs to arround the 295bhp mark with the addition of a larger intercooler, full exhaust system and a reworked standard turbo plus good software, you should be looking at arround just 260bhp for just a software upgrade on its own without the physical changes.
The D5 is well worthy of consideration as with a software upgrade you are probably quicker down the road than the standard T5s.
I just happen to have a full new Volvo 'R' body kit in my garage if you buy a standard car and want the exterior 'R' look, side skirts and front and rear spoilers.
