Not great...I've found turning the DTSC (traction control) off seems to help, although it seems you can't turn it off completely?!

Long wheelbase, auto gearbox, low profile tyres and a turbo diesel don't make for a great combo. Although on the flat it's fine and can be quite entertaining wink

P2 R - Pretty crappy on half worn summer tyres so it stayed put.

P1 R - Very good actually, haven't got stuck once, even in some deepish snow it got me and the Mrs to work.

As the Disco is in for a service (bad timing!) I've been driving the T5. Been very impressed, although did have new tyres just before Christmas which have helped.

I thought the fat 18s would cause problems as we had it pretty deep. But I find that the DSTC does a good job. In deep snow, as it's a geartronic, I just put it in W mode (for "wuss" I think) and put my foot down. The DTSC just won't let you spin the wheels much, so get pretty good traction.

W mode in my old 855 is great although with rapidly wearing tire treads doesnt help much when the snow has frozen and the traction control system is just best left off!

Can't do show and tell unfortunately as camera is bust due to the Canon Powershot CCD chip connection thingy wossname problem. Not repairable by Canon as small ding on camera body. frown bugger! Funnily enough last picture I took with it was in deep snow in Sweden and showed frozen Baltic by the landing stage.

But essentially the Volvo, it's bloody ace, nothing to do with the car but the winter tyres. Yesterday all roads out of our town were subject massive tailbacks due to numpties stuck on hills. I simply drove round them to the back roads and then drove up the back roads. Easy peasy. Even with an auto.

Basically that has been the situation since it first snowed last year, tyres are on their 4th winter seasonal use and maybe get a 5th out of them. :smug:

Incidentally the Powershift transmission on manual (tiptronic style) mode and allowing a start in 2nd is excellent, both on traction and compression braking. Last week I went down a quite slippery 1 in 5 on solid ice in first gear overrun @ just a bit above tickover. Could have gone down quicker but the residents would have thought I was a turbo nutter.

:general chunter at cocks on quads who turn our estate literally into a race track in the evenings:
Unlit, unlicensed, untaxed, uninsured, they'll end up being seized and crushed one night if they haven't flattened somebody before.

Yes I do know it ain't you. hehe

did you know you that Winter mode acts differently depending weather you have the shifter in D, 3 or L ?

I didn't know until I saw a post about it on VOC today

VOC said:
If you select 3, then winter mode, then the box is locked in 2nd, and if you select L, then winter mode, 1st is locked (not sure whether that makes any real difference, because if you selected L, then started moving, that would also lock 1st).

I found mine (P1 V70 T5 auto) was too easily defeated by the conditions. I put it down to the tyres mainly (I don't have the socks like you). I run Good Year Eagle F1's, which I *think* you might too IIRC.
