Well, I thought I would pop down to my local volvo dealer today to have a look at buying a XC90, I think its either a 05 or 06 D5 SE trim with heated seats etc,

How do you find them to drive, my misses will also be driving it and shes quite small are they lumber some to drive around town?

what's the main realisability issues with them?

The main reason why I want one, is I need something to cart my great dane around I always regret selling my XC70 a few years back. what are the bad points about the car?

Turbos are a weak point...well was in mine however I did high mileage in it, but when it goes it costs big time frown.
However it is a nice place to sit, not up to Audi or BMW quality, but with out the stigma.

Had two, never had an issue, other than por work after a Volvo recall for fuel rail clamps. Very pleased - does everything it's supposed to. Tyres last about 16k a set, other than that cheap enough to run.

On number 2 and newer had any problems. brilliant as a family car but bad turning circle can be irritating when parking in tight spaces.
Go for it.

loads with prob with the 4wd system - (i.e dosen't work and you only find out when you come to use it),
something to do with the splines shearing off, wet footwells, clunking steering

read www.volvoforums.org.uk for more details

Saying that my wifes had one (she is 5'3") for neary 4 years and 50k miles

tyres every 16k miles (we never let them get below 3mm)
tracking every set of tyres
Brakes every 2nd set of tyres
blown turbo hose (jublie clip fix)
front wheel bearing (warranty fix)
lots of headlight bulbs (daylight running)

Have owned mine, a D5 Ocean Race, for 4 years and 70k miles, and pleased to say been 100% reliable. It is a great load lugger, and brilliantly comfortable for long journeys. It carries me from Algarve to UK and back twice a year.

My only criticisms are that the headlight lenses turned opaque after 3 years, apparently caused by excessive exposure to the sun. Cost 200 euros to have cleaned, to pass MOT. Also my now aging German Shepherd finds it hard to jump up onto the high tailgate, and that SatNav is absolutely shocking.

Other than that a great car

Pleased with ours. It's a 06 D5 SE Euro IV 185bhp model with geartronic and winter pack.

I'd avoid the 160bhp model as it's not got enough grunt.

I agree with most of the other posters:
1) Goes through tyres - especially fronts. Don't think we got more than 10k miles from the fronts. Rears will probably last around 16k miles. She's on her 3rd set of fronts and 2nd set of rears with only 35k miles covered!
2) It's a little bit of a struggle for medium size dogs to get in the back. We have a golden retriver and a little lift is required to get in. We bought a ramp, but have never used it - too much grief.
3) Fuel eco isn't great. We get around 23 around town and around 30 on longer motorway runs.
4)4wd has been excellent in the snow. Not had any issues at all. In real hairy conditions, simply use the W mode for the gearbox (starts in 3rd).
5) Turning circle is pants.
6) Rear parking sensors are a must. I'd like to have them on the front as well as it's a long car.
7) The only real gripe I have is that the chrome trim at the bottom of the door windows. All of the ends have popped out. You can pop them in, but they still come out after the door has been shut a few times. Just looks untidy. She'll be getting replacements for the next service.
8) There is no spare wheel, so you'll need to carry punchure foam just in case you get stuck somewhere remote.

My misses loves it - especially the heated seats. She mainly drives it. But I think it's great as well. We have holidays every year in France and I always drive. She can tramline a little i.e. follow the lines in the road - problem with big wheels I suppose. But once you get use to it, it's a good drive. The diesel is a little noisy but that's being a little picky. She'll comfortably cruise at motorway speeds and eat up the miles.

Very pleased with ours. Just coming up for 40000 miles and 4 years old in April. Only on 2nd set of tyres and brake pads, but then it mostly does motorway journeys. Usually get 32mpg out of it but might have it chipped soon to boost the economy and performance.

Have you got any more info on the chipping? I'd be quite interested in having it done.

I had a 06 for two years best car we have ever had loking to get another as we miss it so much. My wife is only 5" and she had no issues, great car.

If you dont need 7 seats maybe look at the XC60 but I guess that would be new.

Depending on the budget - bear in mind the manual D5 active could be had brand new for 22k with auto a bit over that.

Just in case that helps smile

I was just going to mention that too! Dealers must really be struggling to shift 3 or 4 year old cars with 40/50K miles for the £18/£19K they are asking when a new one is so cheap?

Power upgrade to about 215hp for £5-600.00 instaled.

Had a 54 plate T6 for 2 years. Got it LPG converted so was getting better mpg than a diesel. Only problem I had in the 2 years was a power steering pump and the metal strips coming off the door pillars.
Loved the LPG conversion as I had good fuel economy but loads of power 272bhp when I needed it.

I would recommend contacting Don at Kalmar Union and getting more info on one of his MTE remaps, which are widely acknowledged to have the best overall driveability as far as performance upgrades on Volvos go. There are a few reviews of the MTE remaps on www.t5d5.org, which also happens to be where the majority of performance oriented Volvo enthusiasts "hang out" so definitely well worth a look.
