I have a Volvo V40 (2004) and wanted to ask a question about the wipers.

When I activate the washer jets the windscreen the wipers start to wipe the window. All well and good.

When I stop the washer jets - the wipers stop for a few seconds - then give on last swipe of the screen.

WHY! ranting

If the window needs an extra swipe I am perfectly capable of doing it myself.

Does anyone know if there is a way to turn it off.

A lot of new cars now do this, I first noticed it a few years ago on a Alfa. It's to get rid of the annoying last trickle from the top of the screen after using the washer.I thought it was quite a good idea, IMHO.

I hate these nannying driver aids. Given the scenario I found myself in - its more trouble than simply doing it yourself if it is required.

Driving on damp road a few weeks back - into the low sun. Car in front was kicking up salt spray from the road making little specks on the windscreen - takes a fair few minutes of this for visibility to be reduced to the point of having to wash the windscreen. Activating the wipers without the washer jets smears these specks so visibility is severely impaired due to the low sun - so I wash the screen and I can see again. In the pause between me turning off the wiper jets and the final sweep - more specks have been blown onto the screen but they in no way impair visibility - the last sweep smears these making visibility poor again - so I have to clean the screen again straight away etc etc etc etc... for 3 hours!

I'm with Moonhawk on this one...I have an old V70 and it comes with non-auto wipers, so that I can adjust the delay on the intermittent setting. I've had auto wipers before, but much prefer a manual setting.

Try:

Pull the stalk towards you for washer, then release pull and slide the stalk down to one wipe, normal or fast wipe and back to off position.

Involved but this might cancel the extra wipe.

If you set them going normally and then press the stalk down to request a single wipe while it's still doing the first group of them, it will cancel the final wipe, or at least it does on my Focus.

That's the best I've found. Very annoying though, that few seconds is usually enough at the moment to get some grit on the window that then gets smeared across without any screenwash.

Hmm my '09 model doesn't do this, perhaps I've turned it off accidentally.

memo to self RTFM. hehe

I take it following a bit further back doesn't help...

Erm, I think the OP said his was a V40, not a V50. My V50 (56 plate) never did it I don't think...but my Mondeo did (I think).

Hmmm, I've got it somehow lodged in my mind that my V50 '06 (55 plate) did do it, but then I'm easily confused these days.

It could have done...I know of my cars from around then did it, but not sure which....can anyone with a 55/56 plate V50 enlighten us?
